Mandatory placement (also known as regulated placement)

Mandatory placement agreement

Mandatory placements cannot be compared with employment under any circumstances.

The criteria listed below, which are also indicated in the placement agreement, define the nature of the placement as training:

  • Mandatory training is ensured by the academic staff member responsible (teaching staff or the director of studies) and by the placement manager, also known as the professional responsible (a staff member of the host company).
  • Agreement which is binding on all parties signing the agreement
  • Measures are put in place to facilitate assessment and providing support. The placement student’s activity will be assessed by the professional responsible and the academic staff member responsible or the placement coordinator

Non-mandatory placement (also known as voluntary placement)

Non-mandatory placement agreement

Students may complete a placement on their own initiative with the aim of complementing their university education with professional experience. This is only possible if the student is following a course which does not provide the opportunity of completing a placement.

Placement during the academic year

Students may complete their placement during their degree course, provided that the placement is compatible with the studies. The placement coordinator will check compatibility and make the necessary arrangements.

Placement during the summer vacation (July/August)

Students may complete a voluntary placement during the summer vacation. However, they must ensure compliance with the regulations set out in the Labour Act regarding the employment of students during the holiday period if he/she is considered to be a pupil or student in accordance with the Act:

  • Anyone enrolled at a teaching centre, in Luxembourg or abroad, who regularly follows a full-time teaching programme
  • Anyone whose schooling ended less than four months ago
  • Anyone aged 15 at least and 27 at most (period expires on the date of the person’s 27th birthday)

The contract duration must not exceed 2 months per calendar year. This also applies if several contracts are in place.
