Explanations regarding placements

We offer students two types of placements.
They differ in terms of the time at which they take place.

Mandatory placement

As an integral part of the course, the work carried out while on a mandatory placement essentially fulfils the function of training. The placement envisaged as part of the course programme is organised and monitored by the University of Luxembourg.
The placement must provide information or career advice and cannot be replaced by employment.

From a contractual point of view, a legal connection is established between the placement student, the university and the employer on the basis of the placement agreement (shift model). This agreement is signed by the student, the academic staff member responsible (or director of studies) and the professional responsible (or the placement manager within the organisation).
Within the scope of this placement, students continue to be covered by student accident insurance. The protection given to student trainees during their studies is also maintained for the duration of and at the premises of their placement.

Voluntary placement during the vacation

This type of placement does not form an integral part of the training. However, an agreement is drawn up between the placement student, the university and the employer to the extent that the student trainee meets the criteria of Volume 1 Section V of the Labour Act (code du travail), that is to say that he/she is considered to be a pupil or student in accordance with the Act:

  • Anyone enrolled at a teaching centre, in Luxembourg or abroad, who regularly follows a full-time teaching programme
  • Anyone whose schooling ended less than four months ago
  • Anyone aged 15 at least and 27 at most (period expires on the date of the person’s 27th birthday)

This agreement is signed by the student, the academic staff member responsible (or director of studies) and the professional responsible.
Within the scope of this voluntary placement, the host organisation must advise the Luxembourg Central Social Security Office ( http://www.ccss.lu/ ) of the student trainee’s placement to ensure accident insurance cover.

Finding suitable candidates

If you are looking for student trainees, please download this "Traineeship offer form" and send it filled by e-mail to fdef-traineeships@uni.lu . The information will then be forwarded to the students concerned.

What is the role of the professional responsible (or placement manager)?

The professional responsible (or placement manager) plays a key role in the practical experience of students on placements. The role encompasses integration, training/supervision and assessment of the placement student.

  • Integration : defining tasks for the placement student and introducing the team with which the placement student will work.
  • Training/supervision : meeting with the student to assign tasks to him/her, update him/her on his/her achievements and provide support, approve or request that the approach to tasks to be carried out is adjusted, and encourage and motivate the placement student.
  • Assessment : according to the training, participation in the placement student’s assessment.
