Doctoral School in Educational Sciences

Aims and Focus

Modern societies are understood to be linguistically, culturally, and socially diverse. The Doctoral School in Educational Sciences is an interdisciplinary academic school dedicated to the development of excellent educational research in multilingual and pluricultural contexts.

Combining historical, education and cultural sciences, psychology, sociology and sociolinguistics and ethnography, this doctoral school includes all relevant disciplines involved in the research of the educational domains with a focus on the challenges of modern societies. Students develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to analyse educational needs, programmes, and reforms and to serve educational policy and the educational profession.

The Doctoral School offers a postgraduate programme leading to a PhD in history, psychology, social science, science of education and science of languages. There are five different research programmes forming the overall theme and contributing to the development of the Doctoral School:

  • Education, Educational Systems, Curriculum, and Educational Inequalities
  • Multilingualism, educational policies, learning and literacies
  • Professionalisation of actors in educational fields
  • Education and learning in non-formal contexts
  • Assessment and Cognitive Science

The training is set up on three levels: The first level is to become acquainted with the international development in the field of educational sciences with a strong focus on one of the five programmes offered. The second level aims at developing an interdisciplinary stance in terms of methods and content across the whole field of the interdisciplinary School in Educational Sciences. The third level engages with questions of transferable skills.

Requested language competences are English, German and / or French
English is the main, but not the only course language.
