Study Centre CESIJE

Centre d'études sur la situation des jeunes (CESIJE)

The youth study centre CESIJE works as an interdisciplinary research group and is
part of the "Integrative Research Unit on Social and Individual Development (INSIDE)"
at the University of Luxembourg. It belongs to the INSIDE research axis "Contexts and
Structures of Growing up".

The centre is co-funded by the Ministry of Family and Integration and the University of Luxembourg.
Leadership is assumed by a mixed governing board on which both parties are equally represented.

One of the main concerns of the CESIJE team is to establish and to maintain an on-going regulated
dialogue between policy, youth work and research in the youth sector. Regular exchanges and
communications aim at a synergetic production of knowledge on youth as well as on the contexts of
growing up. Besides producing policy and practice relevant results, CESIJE moreover aims at maintaining
the integrity in research by creating an institutional environment fostering a scientifically responsible conduct
in youth research. The main contractual tasks of the research team consist of documentation,
representation, evaluation, research and advisory work.

CESIJE's main research themes are: descriptions of young people's living conditions and situations,
lifecourse and generation, transitions to adulthood, school and non-formal education, literacy and media
environment, voluntary work, political participation and citizenship, health and well-being, young people's
worklife and mobility. In the domain of evaluation, CESIJE focuses on institutional, programme and policy
evaluation.

Originally CESIJE was founded as a non profit making organisation in 1995. With the creation of the
University of Luxembourg in 2003, political and academic decision-makers very soon agreed to integrate
CESIJE as a research structure into the University. They decided to maintain its original missions in the new
context. The integration process, which started in 2006, was finalised in 2009.
