Joint supervision of thesis

A joint supervision of thesis enables a Ph.D. student to conduct his research work under the supervision of two thesis supervisors:one at the University of Luxembourg and the second in a foreign university. The two co-supervisors assume jointly the task of supervising the Ph.D. student who is required to work in both establishments in turn. The thesis will be subjected to a single defence which, if successful, will lead either to two diplomas or to a joint diploma from the two institutions involved in the joint supervision.

A joint supervision of thesis is specific to each Ph.D. student. It is carried out on the basis of a joint supervision agreement concluded by and between the two institutions concerned within the first year of the Ph.D. programme. As the registration dates vary widely from one university to another, Ph.D. students are strongly advised to make sure that the period between registration in the two contracting universities is as short as possible to facilitate the subsequent administrative formalities.

Joint supervision for Ph.D. students enrolled at the University of Luxembourg

Ph.D. students enrolled in a foreign university: joint supervision with the University of Luxembourg.

Only Ph.D. students who register for the first year of the doctoral programme can apply for joint supervision. To that end, they must first choose a dissertation topic that is accepted by a dissertation supervisor at the university.

The Ph.D. student and his dissertation supervisor must then decide together how the dissertation is to be financed and whether to opt for joint supervision. If joint supervision is chosen, the Ph.D. student should indicate this choice in his application. The joint supervision agreement must be signed during the first year of the doctoral programme.
