History and theory of education and curriculum
The LCMI Research Field “History and theory of education and curriculum” focuses primarily on the mesoscopic level of the educational field, the school systems in their cultural, ideological, political, and economical context. It corresponds closely to one of the four pillars of the research priority of the Plan Quadriennal of the University of Luxembourg (2010-2013) “Education and learning in a multilingual and pluricultural context,” namely the “Analysis of the educational systems in a national and European context.”
It aims at understanding the manifold aspects of the educational fields beyond the classroom-activities such as teaching and learning. The approach to the different national and regional educational systems (primary, secondary, and tertiary level), theories and practices is comparative and international in principle. It focuses on the culturally characterized emergences and interactions of educational ideas, educational policy, educational institutions, and educational practices in their contemporary contexts and includes a variety of disciplinary and methodical approaches such as history, sociology, philosophy, politics, economy, religious studies, and educational theory. As far as possible the research activities shall be conducted in cooperation with idiosyncratic networks in Europe and Overseas to guarantee the international character and quality of the outcomes. The research field will include historical and contemporary approaches to the field of education alike.
The (sub-)disciplinary keywords, that represent both approaches to the field of education and frames of projects are: Contextual history of (educational) ideas, history of education, sociology of education, curriculum studies, cultural studies, educational policy, comparative education, psychology/psychoanalysis (as a mode of thinking about people, education, and learning)
