MExLab
MExLab: The Media and Experimental Lab
Since December 2008, the Campus Walferdange hosts MExLab , a scientific laboratory for media and experimental research. MExLab aims at furthering both research and teaching at the University of Luxembourg. With its experimentally oriented approach, the lab substantially adds to already well-established approaches to scientific research within the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education (FLSHASE) at the University of Luxembourg. Initiated by the research axis ‘Anger and Aggression in Institutional and Social Contexts’ coordinated by Prof. Georges STEFFGEN , the lab is part of the research Unit INSIDE (Director: Prof. Dieter FERRING ) and also located in the same building (Bloc 12).
With regard to research, MExLab is well suited to cover a broad range of prevalent experimental issues, including aggression research related to social psychology, media psychology, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology. Within these contexts, for example, lab experiments focus on the effects of violent video games on aggressive cognition, emotion, and behaviour. Up to five participants may be tested simultaneously in computer-based experiments. With AdRacer , a custom-built vehicle body that includes driver seat, steering wheel, foot pedals, and projection screen, driver's reactions in realistic 3D environments may be tested. With this realistic but safe setting approach, researchers gain valuable insights into the driver’s behaviour in critical driving situations.
With regard to teaching, MExLab provides students with a “hands-on” learning opportunity to design, conduct, and analyze experiments. In addition, the equipment of the lab serves as tools to collect data for the students' own research (i.e., thesis papers). The hardware and software available in the lab provide students and researchers with the opportunity to design and implement complex test procedures, measure the reactions of participants, and finally analyze the resulting data.
MExLab is open to researchers and students from all faculties and departments (e.g., applied computer science), thus further supporting scientific exchange and cooperation at the University of Luxembourg. For exchanging ideas and scheduling the use of the laboratory potential users may want to contact the lab supervisor, Dr. André MELZER .
