Working in Luxembourg

The rule is that all students registered in the University of Luxembourg are entitled to take a student job, irrespective of their nationality; this authorisation is nonetheless subject to certain conditions. Students who are nationals of a non-EU Member State must have a work permit.

• Work during the holidays

To be able to work during the holidays, you must be under 27 years old (cf. Act of 19 August 2008 on aid to research training, amending the Labour Code, article 3, (4)). If you are over 27, you can no longer work under this arrangement, but must be under contract for a specified period. Work during the holidays is limited to two months per calendar year, and may be performed only during the academic holidays. The remuneration must correspond to at least 80% of the minimum social wage, scaled in accordance with age.
Note: Work during the holidays is governed by the Act of 22 July 1982, amended by the Act of 19 August 2008 on aid to research training.

• Contract of employment for a specified period

A contract for a specified period may not exceed 24 months and may not be renewed more than twice. The maximum amount of time worked must not exceed 10 hours per week, said ten hours being calculated over a period of four weeks. The remuneration must correspond to at least the minimum hourly social rate (€ 10,1593 for those aged 18 and over).

Students must hold a work permit in order to be able to work during the holidays, under contract for a specified period, or even for a non-remunerated required in-service training scheme which is an integral part of the course.
Attention : If you are registered in the first year of the bachelor’s degree programme, you are entitled to work only for the University of Luxembourg, and only as of the 2nd semester, if you obtained 25 ECTSs in the 1st semester. Conversely, work during the holidays is independent of your year of registration. In any event, you must be registered on a full-time basis at the University of Luxembourg.
