A historical perspective is of key importance to tomorrow’s professionals in the academic, business and political world to deal with socio-political issues of the future. The Master in European Contemporary History gives the right expertise to explore contemporary European issues. With its connections to numerous European institutions, several international cultural institutions and numerous international companies situated in Luxembourg, the Master's professional environment is both wide-ranging and stimulating.

With the European institutions a stone’s throw away from the Campus, students have privileged access to documentation in the European institutions, to the digital and media library of the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) as well as the   EIB archives on Campus. The Master programme puts special emphasis on Digital Humanities and Public History thus offering a unique blend of historical theory and practical application
The Master functions in a multicultural European and multilingual teaching and learning environment. It boasts a distinguished teaching staff, including Prof. Leboutte, holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European history. It provides excellent student support thanks to its small classes, seminar groups, one to one tutorials and series of conferences held by the international experts and key players in the making of Europe.

Goals

Which practices, institutions, cultural values and interpretations shape the European continent? What is the relation between a political process, i.e. the recent European integration, and wider social and cultural changes? To which extent is 'Europeanisation' a valuable and operable concept? How does the nation-state (a European invention) fit into processes of globalisation and regionalisation?

Our Master programme addresses these questions by putting contemporary European issues into historical perspective. Rather than assuming one all-encompassing definition of ‘Europe’, whether cultural or geographical, the programme highlights the different contexts within which the European past and present can be analysed. This allows for a critical understanding of complex social, cultural and economic processes.
