Project I: Development of a mobile version for a metabolic network database

 We are looking for a motivated student who is well versed in mobile application development. The candidate will be responsible for the development of the mobile version of the “Virtual Metabolic Human” (VMH) a database that connects human metabolism, human associated gut microbes and disease.

The project is inserted in an initiative to expand the functionalities of VMH. You will work in a multi-disciplinary research group that uses computational modelling approaches to study the impact of diet in human health and disease.

Your profile:

  • Bachelors or Masters in Informatics or related fields
  • Experience in app development (iOS prioritized)
  • Fluency in oral and written English

Project II: Development of advanced search capabilities in a metabolic network database

We are looking for a motivated student who is well versed in web development, with emphasis in Representational state transfer (REST) architecture. The candidate will be responsible for the development of extended search capabilities for “Virtual Metabolic Human” (VMH) a database that connects human metabolism, human associated gut microbes and disease. These changes will include design modifications to the webpage but also extension of functionalities in the backend application.

The project is inserted in an initiative to expand the functionalities of VMH. You will work in a multi-disciplinary research group that uses computational modelling approaches to study the impact of diet in human health and disease.

Your profile:

  • Bachelors or Masters in Informatics or related fields
  • Experience in web development (Django is a plus)
  • Knowledge of Representational state transfer (REST) architecture
  • Fluency in oral and written English

Student internship – Continuous integration of computer code
Applications are invited for a student internship position in Systems Biomedicine available in the Molecular Systems Physiology Group (Prof. Dr. I. Thiele, http://thielelab.eu) at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg.

Your Role
Performing numerical simulations using high quality code is important. In order to increase the quality of our computer code used for critical biomedical simulations, a comprehensive test suite with logical tests is essential. This is particularly true for large code sets and for code that is written by a community.
Our code is used extensively by the COBRA community worldwide, and is a vital tool for reconstruction and analysis of biochemical networks. Our aim is to extend our current test suite in order to increase the code coverage of this important tool – and, excitingly,  you can be part of that.
You will be mainly involved with writing high quality and key tests (primarily in the MATLAB environment) in order to increase the coverage of existing code and advance the continuous integration of our code. Your main task will consist of:

  • understanding the purpose of existing code
  • planning an appropriate logical test
  • writing the code for the test
  • integrating the test with the existing test suite
  • ensuring that the code style is compliant with guidelines.

Your Profile

  • Ideal candidates will have concluded their bachelor degree in computer science, bioinformatics, IT, (any) engineering or related fields.
  • Programming knowledge of MATLAB is essential. Other programming/scripting languages, such as C/C++, Fortran, CSS/HTML, and Julia are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of using the shell (any OS) is essential.
  • Knowledge of a code versioning system (such as git) is desirable.
  • Proficiency in UNIX is desirable.
  • Knowledge of optimisation, biology, biochemistry or constraint-based modelling is desirable.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively. Fluency in English is required.
  • Candidates should be able to handle multiple assignments at one time while working independently and effectively under deadlines.
