Multilingual and connected With the big Summer Party last Friday, it was time again to say Thank You to all UL members for their commitment over the last semester. Over 400 people, including about 70 kids, joined the party on Campus Kirchberg. They were rewarded by a summerly open air setting, including public viewing of the World Cup. The highlight was most certainly the huge uni.lu logo, designed to be painted by the UL members and to emphasise the UL’s spirit “multilingual, personal, connected”. Children enjoyed the bouncy castle and the various animations in the cool cafeteria: games and painting ateliers as well as a magic and ventriloquist show. What VIPs say about us Paperjam, arguably the foremost monthly business magazine in Luxembourg, just celebrated 10 years of existence. It published a special issue, hors série, to celebrate the event. One finds, from page 116 to 208, 25 contributions on the subject “Le Luxembourg en 2020”. Cambridge at LCSB Dr. Jorge Gonçalves, assistant professor from the Department of Engineering, Cambridge University is visiting the LCSB during this summer. Together with Rudi Balling and Antonio del Sol, Jorge Gonçalves will initiate projects for applying dynamic models to biological data. (+ info)

Professorin zum Mitglied im Senatsausschuss der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft gewählt Prof. Sabine Krolak-Schwerdt wurde 2010 zum Mitglied im Senatsausschuss Wettbewerb (SAW) der Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e.V. gewählt. Doctoral student wins award for his outstanding research A young doctoral candidate of the University of Luxembourg was awarded the 1st prize for “Outstanding Paper & Presentation”. At the 32nd International Navigation Conference of the association PIANC, 29 year-old Paulo Osório was rewarded for his work done in a research project within his post doctoral studies at the university. Cosmic bullets: cosmic rays at extreme energies - by Danilo Zavrtanik On Monday 14th June, Danilo Zavrtanik, physicist and member of the Governance Board of the University of Luxembourg is going to give an overview of the field as well as current characteristics of the Pierre Auger Observatory and recent research results about cosmic rays at extreme energies will be presented. Student’s view of Auschwitz In memory of 6 million Jews who died during the Second World War, and in the frame of the official commemoration day on 12 April each year, the UL students Hanne Wendorff, Katharina Blümling, Lukas Föhr, and Adina Lupu invite you to the vernissage on 13 April of their photo exhibition "Students' view of Auschwitz". The exhibition is organised by the Luxembourg University Students and will take place on Campus Limpertsberg, hall du rectorat, from 13 to 30 April. In winter they have to stay shut to keep the heat inside the building, but more importantly those doors prevent the spread of fire or smoke all year long. Turn the lights off A lot of energy can be saved by making sure that offices are lit up only when necessary. The University has installed motion detectors in the hallways and washrooms. The old light bulbs are gradually being replaced by energy saving light bulbs. Staff members can contribute by turning off the ceiling lights when daylight is sufficient or by using a desk lamp, which is closer and therefore offers better lighting. The multilingual face of the University of Luxembourg marks everyday experiences on campus and is tangible in lectures, research activities, management and administration. Following the previous conferences held in Freiburg (Switzerland), Helsinki (Finland) and Bolzano (Italy), the University of Luxembourg will host the fourth scientific conference on Multilingual Universities from the 4th to the 6th February 2010 within the multilingual landscape of the officially trilingual Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Beispiele für diese Erinnerungspraxis, die insbesondere von der Kriegs- und Holocausterinnerung mehr oder weniger unberührt ist, sind das Gedächtnis der Arbeiterschaft, der bäuerlichen Welt und das Migrationsgedächtnis. U2010: new emergency and crisis management solutions The objective of the research project U2010 is to provide the most capable means of communication to everybody required to act in case of accident, catastrophe or crisis, while using existing or future telecommunication infrastructures. The University of Luxembourg launches its first public e-newsletter The University of Luxembourg launches a new service for the winter semester 2009/2010: starting today, the University sends out its first public e-newsletter. “uni.lu news” is a concise and brief information tool about scientific lectures and other public events at the University.
