Vygotsky is a well-known author in the field of Education and Applied Linguistics. However,
pedagogies based on his assumptions are less recognized out of the former Soviet Union.
One of these is Davydov´s approach (Davydov, 1988), called developmental teaching
(Chaiklin, 2001), which due to its innovative and challenging character is not widely used in
schools even in Russia. In addition, teacher education in this perspective is not frequently
addressed. This article aims to 1) describe how this pedagogy was used in an academic
writing course in English, 2) discuss the challenges this pedagogy poses on teachers and
students and 3) reclaim the relevance of V.V. Davydov and his pedagogy for reflection and
transformation of the current educational context.

Organised by the Institute of Cognitive Science and Assessment (COSA)
