Applied Educational Sciences (AES)

The description, documentation, analysis, explanation, understanding, and development of structures and of teaching and learning processes are at the heart of the Institute of Applied Educational Sciences. We study learning and teaching in a range of contexts with the aim of developing, understanding and improving the quality of education.Contexts of research can range from within classrooms, to extra‐curricular activities, and outside of school settings, including homes. Currently, the researchers carry out projects in the fields of science education, language, math, motor learning and information and communication technologies.

Our research focuses on the manifold interactions between teachers and learners (as well as other people involved in the teaching/learning processes such as caregivers), within the context of the respective institutions (e.g. schools, the “maison relais”, homes). We aim for the systematic, empirical-‐methodological examination and theoretical representation (models) of central aspects of teaching and learning.

Quantitative and qualitative research methods are facilitated alongside systematic observation procedures, participatory research approaches, standardized tests and experimental, resp. quasi-‐experimental methods, qualitative methods of ethnographic observation, biographically narrative interviews as well as action research are also increasingly employed.
