Main research projects and performances

  • Coordinator of FNR PRIDE Doctoral Training Unit "Digital History and Hermeneutics" (starting January 1, 2017). Mission statement: As a trading zone for the negotiation of new knowledge, the DH-LAB promotes a hands-on approach to new digital tools and technologies in the field of history. In training students and researchers in using new methods of doing historical research with digital datasets and in exploring new forms of historical storytelling online, the DH-Lab aims to be a place of critical reflection on both the epistemological and methodological challenges of doing history in the age of big data and digital meta-sources (see also the DH-Lab webpage).
  • Supervisor of Postdoc project "A digital platform for source criticism" by Dr. Stef Scagliola
  • Supervisor of PhD project "Digital History as Trading Zone" by Max Kemman (visit his research blog www.maxkemman.nl)
  • Supervisor of the FNR AFR PhD project "Shaping a digital memory platform on migration narratives: a public history project on Italian and Portuguese migration memories in Luxembourg" by Anita Lucchesi (visit her research blog historiografianarede.wordpress.com)
  • Supervisor of the FNR AFR PDR project "Failure and Success of Dummy Head Recording: An Innovation History of 3D Listening" by Dr. Stefan Krebs (visit the project blog binauralrecording.wordpress.com)
  • Member of the European (FP 7) research projects „VIDEO ACTIVE – Opening Up Europe’s Televisual Heritage“ (2005-2008) and “EU SCREEN. Best Practice Network” (2009-2012) within the eContentplus-programme of the European Commission (see www.euscreen.eu ). In both projects I acted as mediator between the scholarly and the archival community. Important scholarly outputs of this engagement are the special issue on “Transnational Television History: A European Comparative Perspective” in Media History and the setting up of the open access e-journal VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture (see www.viewjournal.eu).
  • Main applicant and leader of the NWO research project “Changing Platforms of Ritualized Memory Practices: The Cultural Dynamics of Home Movies” (including 2 PhD and 1 Post-Doc position; 2012-2015). The project aims at analyzing the impact of new technologies for home movie making and screening (from 8mm to video and digital) on the production of family narratives in a long term historical perspective (see homemoviesproject.wordpress.com/)
  • Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies / NIAS (February – June 2011). Member of the NIAS theme-group “The Making of Europe“ which prepares a 6 volume European history of technology (1850-2000) to be published with Palgrave/McMillan in 2015/2016. In the series edited by Johan Schot and Phil Scranton I am co-authoring the volume entitled 'Communicating Europe: Technologies, Information, Events' (1850-2000) together with Prof. Pascal Griset (Paris IV/ Sorbonne). For details on the series and related projects see www.makingeurope.eu
  • Leader of the European research group “Transmitting and Receiving Europe” (TRANS) aiming at promoting a comparative European history of broadcasting technologies. Since 2007 regular workshops and conference panels. Forthcoming in autumn 2012: A. Badenoch / A. Fickers / C. Henrich-Franke (eds.), Airy Curtains. European broadcasting during the Cold War (Baden-Baden, Nomos-Verlag).
  • Participation in the ESF-EUROCORE-programme “Inventing Europe” and member of the management committee of the Tensions of Europe research network (www.tensionsofeurope.eu). An essential outcome of my engagement in the ToE network is A. Badenoch / A. Fickers (eds.),Materializing Europe. Transnational Infrastructures and the Project of Europe (Palgrave/McMillan, Basingstoke 2010).
  • With Karin Bijsterveld (main applicant) responsible for the research project “Soundscapes of the Urban Past: Staged Sound as Mediated Cultural Heritage” (2009-2012), funded by the NWO-Cultural Dynamics programme
  • Four year research grant (VENI) of the "Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek" (NWO) in the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme on "Television as a conservative revolution? A comparative study in the history of European media 1945-1975" (2005 – 2009). One important output was A. Bignell / A. Fickers (eds.), A European Television History (Blackwell-Wiley, Malden 2008) (see cms.hum.uu.nl/ethn/)
  • Initiator and responsible manager of a regional history research project on the inventarization and historical analysis of the newspaper „Malmedyer Kreisblatt / St. Vither Volkszeitung (1866-1945)” in cooperation with the Historical Institute of the RWTH Aachen and the Belgian State Archives in Eupen, financed by the government of the German Speaking Community in Belgium.
