ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel and Façade Engineering

The ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel and Façade Engineering (AMCFE) is a cooperation of ArcelorMittal and the University of Luxembourg for education, research and consultancy with focus on façade systems for steel-intensive solutions.

Modern façades in buildings equipped with advanced technology make up as much as one third of construction costs. They integrate construction technology, ventilation and climate control, playing a significant role in the building's energy consumption. High-tech façade systems reduce the energy consumption of buildings. To achieve a reduction in energy consumption, the basic building structure, technology and façade have to mutually complement each other. The researchers at the University of Luxembourg aim to make a contribution in this regard.

Research and Development are core activities for ArcelorMittal to maintain and improve the competitiveness of steel, for the benefit not only of the company and steel industry at large, but also for the customers and the environment. The Chair is an initial step towards an enduring cooperation between Luxembourg's largest employer and the University. Research will contribute to reducing energy consumption and thus support the approach of delivering sustainable steel solutions. Furthermore, the combination of steelmaking competency with the University's research potential is an opportunity to support Luxembourg on its way to becoming a leading country in the knowledge-based society of the 21st century.

The main topics of the Chair, always with respect to interdisciplinary, are:

  • Innovative building skins (Fusion between architecture and engineering),
  • Structural Glazing and fixation),
  • Intersection between the building structure and the façade system,
  • Sustainability & Façades,
  • Modular construction and material flows,
  • Composite Steel and Concrete Structures

The ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel and Façade Engineering is located in the Research Unit of Engineering Science (RUES).
