  Ulrike Hanesch  studied Theory of Education and additionally Biology at the University of Würzburg and earned her PhD degree in Biology in 1987. Following two years of postdoctoral fellowship she joined the Medical Faculty of the University of Würzburg, Institute of Physiology, as an assistant professor and later on as associate professor and obtained her habilitation in 1999. The teaching activities covered the Human Physiology for medical students, biologists, psychologists, and pharmacists. From 1995 on she was chief researcher in the “Sonderforschungsbereich 353” of the Universities of Würzburg and Erlangen. In 2005 she joined the University of Luxembourg as a neurophysiologist.

Dr. Hanesch spent several month as an invited visiting scientist in the Marine Biomedical Institute (University of Texas, Medical Branch at Galveston, USA), the Johns Hopkins Hospital (NIH, NIDA, Baltimore, USA), the Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan), and at “The Toronto Hospital Arthritis Centre and Playfair Neuroscience Unit" (Toronto Western Hospital,Toronto, Canada). She got awards and research grants of the “Jubiläumsstiftung der Universität Würzburg” (1992), the"Senator Kurt und Inge Schuster Foundation" (1995), and the “Sonderforschungsbereich 353” at the Universities Erlangen and Würzburg (1995-2004).

Her research interests focus mainly on the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the nociceptive system and the mechanisms of pain processing.
