(03.02.2010) Fachtagung: Hafen und Stadt – Wie gehen Städte mit ihren Häfen um?Die Arbeitsgruppe Geographie und Raumplanung ist federführend beteiligt an der Ausrichtung der Fachtagung „Hafen und Stadt – Wie gehen die Städte mit ihren Häfen um?“. Die Tagung greift den an vielen Binnenhäfen auftretenden Konflikt zwischen logistisch-gewerblicher Nutzung versus Umwandlung in Wasserlagen auf, fragt nach Strategien der logistischen Aufwertung der Häfen und nach Lösungsmöglichkeiten für den Nutzungskonflikt zwischen Gewerbe und Wohnen bzw. Diensteistung. Die Tagung steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Forschungsvorhaben „Binnen_Land“ ( www.binnen-land.de ) und wird am 25. Februar 2010 in Berlin stattfinden, gemeinsam ausgerichtet von Wissenschaft und Praxis sowie unterstützt vom Deutschen Städtetag. [ mehr ]

(12.11.2009) New group of Master students start their studies with field trip to Brussels5-7 October 2009: It has become a good tradition – the Master's Programme in Spatial Development and Analysis ( www.spatial.uni.lu ) once again started with a field trip to Brussels and Louvain-la-Neuve. The purpose of such a field trip at the very beginning is twofold: First, it gives students and tutors the opportunity to get to know each other and to test the students' conceptual and methodological precognition with the help of practical field work. Second, the students gain insight into the functioning of European institutions and their influence on spatial development by visiting various institutions based in Brussels. This year, the group also attended various sessions of the “Open Days – European Week of Regions and Cities”.

The focus will be on understanding the diversity of regulatory mechanisms and governance forms directed at fostering the different segments of these economies on various spatial scales. The conference aims at linking academics, practitioners and urban planners as well as cultural entrepreneurs and artists to discuss appropriate instruments and governance formats. The conference will explore various particularities of creative industries that can be taken into account in order to establish knowledge on suitable and context specific strategies for public or private interventions in this field. [ mehr ] (03.09.2009) La CIPU a lancé son site internet et sa lettre électronique « Brèves urbaines »À l’occasion de son premier anniversaire, la Cellule nationale d’Information pour la Politique Urbaine (CIPU) a lancé le 27 juillet 2009 son site Internet www.cipu.lu et le premier numéro de sa lettre électronique « Brèves urbaines ». Que ce soient des exemples de bonnes pratiques dans le domaine de l’aménagement urbain, comme les pistes cyclables et les espaces publics, ou la politique urbaine menée par l’Union Européenne, seul en profite celui qui en est bien informé. Or, veiller à cette transmission de l’information, c’est exactement une des missions de la CIPU depuis sa création en juin 2008. [ lire la suite ]
(14.08.2009) Remise de diplômes de la Formation Continue en Aménagement du Territoire - Lancement de la 4ème promotionLuxembourg, le 8 juillet 2009 – Pendant un an, 18 employés ont participé à la Formation Continue en Aménagement du Territoire à l’Université du Luxembourg. Romain Diederich, responsable de l’aménagement du territoire au Ministère de l’Intérieur et le Prof. Christian Schulz, Directeur d’Etudes, ont remis leur diplôme aux participants reçus. A cette occasion, Romain Diederich a souligné que la Formation continue est un élément essentiel de l’évolution extrêmement dynamique de l’aménagement du territoire. L’évolution rapide du pays durant les vingt dernières années ainsi que la mise en place d’instruments de planification nouveaux constituent des défis pour les administrations communales compétentes ainsi que pour les bureaux de planification de la Grande Région. Dans ce contexte, il est essentiel que les connaissances techniques soient consolidées et que l’échange avec les praticiens d’autres disciplines et les responsables des institutions soit intensifié. Au cours d’environ 150 heures, les fondamentaux des disciplines clé sont explorés comme par exemple : les concepts intégrés de l’aménagement du territoire, de l’urbanisme et de l’architecture ainsi que le développement régional durable. Une large place est également faite aux principes juridiques de l’aménagement communal et local. Cette formation continue bilingue (FR – DE) s’adresse aux praticiens de l’administration publique, aux bureaux de planification, associations et tout autre organisme travaillant sur l’aménagement local et régional dans la Grande région. Architectes, urbanistes et géographes ayant terminé leurs études supérieures de même qu’ingénieurs et techniciens avec expérience professionnelle sont particulièrement ciblés. Ausgangspunkt ist die vielerorts beobachtete Revitalisierung von Innenstädten für das Wohnen, die schon als „Renaissance" der Stadt gedeutet wurde. [ mehr ]

"Creative Economy: Options for the Governance in European Metropolitan Regions" is the title of the international conference which is organised by the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), the Department of Geography at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Chair of Urban Studies at the University of Luxembourg. ] Modell Emscher Park? Podiumsdiskussion im Rahmen von Themenabenden zur Regionalentwicklung und Industriekultur
Im Rahmen der Internationalen Bauausstellung (IBA) Emscher Park wurden zwischen 1989 und 1999 unterschiedlichste Projekte in der Emscher-Region im nördlichen Ruhrgebiet durchgeführt. Sie alle hatten zum Ziel, den Strukturwandel in Deutschlands größter Industrieregion aktiv zu gestalten. Was hat die Internationale Bauausstellung bewirkt? Welche Ansätze sind auf andere Gegenden übertragbar? Das sind Fragen, die anlässlich des ersten Themenabends am 19. Mai 2009 diskutiert werden. Der Abend beginnt mit der Vorstellung des Forschungsprojektes zum Thema namens "IBA revisited" und geht dann über zu einer Podiumsdiskussion, an der auch Prof. Markus Hesse teilnehmen wird. Launch of the ESPON-Project MetroborderHow can cross-border metropolitan regions be defined and mapped? What are their potentials with regard to an economically successful and sustainable development? These are the questions addressed by the research project METRBORDER which has been launched with a workshop on Campus Walferdange on 4-5 February. The research team brings together 8 institutions from 5 countries – the University of Luxembourg being the lead partner, represented by Christian Schulz, Estelle Evrard and Tobias Chilla. Within the coming two years, cross-border regions will be mapped with regard to their metropolitan functions, i.e. with respect to their capacity of exerting supra-regional control. Besides the European level, two case studies will be conducted – first the Greater Region around Luxembourg, and second the Upper Rhine including Basel, Strasbourg, Karlsruhe etc. The focus of the project is to find out in what way the potentials of these cross-border regions can best be made use of. The project will be financed by the EU programme ESPON (European Spatial Planning Observatory Network). The institutions involved are:
The City as a Terminal – the new book by Markus HesseThe on-time delivery of goods is regarded as a primary factor of the urban economy and is being monitored by businesses and government alike. However, much analysis of freight transportation and the flow of goods into, out of and within urban areas focuses on functional, business-related approaches. This book examines the interrelationship between logistics development on one hand and urban development and geographical issues, such as land use and location, on the other. Avoiding certain one-dimensional views on ‘logistics impacts on the city’, it discloses the complex interaction of the logistics system with the entire urban environment. It also bridges the gap between recent geographical research into new production systems and (post)modern consumption patterns. Particularly based on two empirical case studies conducted in Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany, and Northern California, United States, it examines issues such as: the historical nexus between urban areas and logistics; current urban developments with regards to goods distribution; city-region related characteristics of freight flows; locational dynamics; and specific freight related urban problems and conflicts.
