Dr Rod McCall joined SnT in October 2010 is a member of the SECAN-Lab research group which is led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Engel. His primary area of work is human-computer interaction where he focuses on aspects such as usability, place and presence within mixed realities, cars and mobile technologies. He leads two projects: I-GEAR (FNR) and LiveCity (EC). I-GEAR explores the use of incentives and serious gaming technologies to change driver behavior (PI: Prof. Dr. Thomas Engel). He is also the local project leader for LiveCity which explores live video-to-video systems that use new Internet right-of-way technologies (PI: Prof. Dr. Thomas Engel). Since joining SnT and in collaboration with colleagues he has attracted projects with a total value of €5.3m (approx.) with the University of Luxembourg's share being approximately €1.3m.

Prior to joining SnT he was based at Fraunhofer FIT and was the co-ordinator of the EC funded IPCity project on mixed realities and has worked on a number of other leading research projects relating to virtual reality and location-aware technologies. He has authored around 40 publications in conferences, journals, workshops, magazines and books during which time he has edited special issues of the Journal of Personal and Ubquitous Computing and Psychnology.  He has also organised workshops at the ACM CHI and BCS HCI conferences and is a reviewer for many leading journals and conferences including: Interacting with Computers and Presence: Tele-operators and Virtual Environments. In 2008 he and his co-authors won a best paper award at the ACM MobileHCI conference for work on augmented reality gaming. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the IFIP working group on Social and Ethical Issues in Entertainment Computing.
