General terms and conditions
ALLOCATION AND RENTAL OF HOUSING TO STUDENTS
Chapter 1 – General principles
Art. 1 The available rooms are reserved for students duly registered at the University of Luxembourg.
Art. 2 Student Accommodation Unit (‘Unité Logements Étudiants’) is the sole authority that can accept or reject student applications for housing.
Art. 3 The Student Accommodation Unit decides on the basis of “housing applications” filed by students in search of housing. A room is allocated on a first registered, first served basis. Nevertheless, the Student Accommodation Unit will make sure that the right balance is found between the three faculties, the various nationalities, and both sexes.
Art. 4 Only requests made using the official “housing application” form will be taken into consideration.
Chapter 2 - Conditions of admission
Art. 5 An applicant may be admitted only if the relevant registration formalities have been fulfilled.
Art. 6 Preference will be given to candidates whose parents are not domiciled in the City of Luxembourg and to newly registered students. Where appropriate, the seniority of the application will be taken into consideration.
Art. 7 Doctoral candidates, assistants, or assistant-researchers are accepted; nevertheless, preference will be given to candidates who have not yet earned a university degree.
Art. 8 Applications for housing from students enrolled on a part-time basis or for a programme for which their presence is not mandatory will not be taken into consideration. This restriction shall apply also to students who have already earned a degree at the University of Luxembourg and to persons working for an employer other than the university.
Chapter 3 – Period of residence and termination of the lease
Art. 9 The Student Accommodation Unit concludes lease for the winter and summer semester for a 5-month period. The lease can be extended at the beginning of each semester or for the summer, provided all the rent has been paid and the student is enrolled again for the following semester. The maximum period of residence may not exceed the period of studies. If the departure coincides with the examination period, the lease can be extended at the tenant’s written request.
Art. 10 All conditions governing residence are laid down in the lease signed by and between the tenant and the University of Luxembourg.
Art. 11 The lease may be terminated in the following cases:
- If the main lease is terminated by the landlord.
- If the rent is not paid.
- When the behaviour of the tenant or that of any sub-lessee falls short of the consideration owed to the other inhabitants of the building, or is of such nature as to compromise the state thereof.
- When the tenant sublets his or her room to a third person.
- If the particular provisions in the Rules and Regulations are not complied with.
- If the tenant’s academic situation changes from that declared at the time the lease was signed.
Art. 12 If a tenant wishes to terminate a contract before moving in, the Student Accommodation Unit reserves the right to keep the deposit of €350 for damages.
Art. 13 The tenant shall take out civil liability insurance. The insurance coverage of tenant’s risks (water, fire, and electricity damage) is included in the monthly rent.
