Compulsory insurance for students studying in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

The social insurance code (article 1, sub-paragraph 14) stipulates that people over 18 who are studying or undergoing non-remunerated vocational training in an apprenticeship scheme in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, who are not insured otherwise, and who are not covered as family members (co-insurance) may apply to be covered by Social Security in Luxembourg. For those under 30, such coverage is free of charge.

Who is concerned?

The application for Social Security affiliation concerns only people who are not insured otherwise, i.e.:

  1. People from a non-European country with which Luxembourg has not signed a Social Security agreement;

    (To find out whether your country is on the list of countries that have signed an agreement, go to www.cns.lu under “insured, school holidays”).

  2. People from a European country or a country with which an agreement has been signed, who do not have a personal right or protection as family members in their country of provenance;

    If the persons (case n°1 and 2) have income not exceeding the minimum guaranteed income as defined by law, the State assumes the payment of contribution for health insurance until they reach the age of 30 (article 32 of the social insurance code).

How to proceed?

Go to the Common Social Security Centre with the following documents: :

Attention: People over 30 years of age must apply for continued health insurance (price: 96.90€/month)

The application for coverage must be renewed each semester. The following documents must be provided at that time: 1 school certificate + the previous social security card

Who is concerned?

People from a European country or a country with which an agreement has been signed, who have a personal right or protection as family members in their country of provenance.

How to proceed?

 

Go to the National Health Service, international registration department, with the following documents:

 

Attention : Registration by European card may be extended. By simply submitting a new signed statement of truth and a school certificate by the expiry date of the European card.
