Master en droit européen - LL.M. (académique)Second year (semesters 3 & 4) : Specialisation in General European Law (and SatComMedia Law Option)The specialisation in General European Law builds on the knowledge students acquired during their first year of studies in the Master in European Law LL.M. at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance or equivalent competencies acquired at another University. This specialisation addresses students with a more research-oriented focus and an interest in a broad overview of European Law, thereby allowing a vast possibility for areas in which to conduct professional work in the future. Students in this field have the possibility to build their own study programme according to their interests. It allows a widespread insight into the different relevant topics in European Law by profiting from the other specialisations in European Law offered at the Faculty - altogether five other specialisations - from which the courses can be chosen. In addition, a certain number of courses are specifically offered only for the Master students in this field, included the SatComMedia Law option. Participation in one of the international Moot Court competitions is a key offer for law students at the University of Luxembourg and an integral part of the General European Law specialisation. The last semester of the specialisation in General European Law requires that students elaborate an extensive Master thesis written in any field of European Law, including an oral defence. This gives students the opportunity to explore a specific topic in an intensive manner. Additionally, it reflects the student’s capacity to undertake academic research in case he/she is interested to progress into a Ph.D. programme at the University of Luxembourg. Students can also profit from ongoing research at the Faculty and be integrated in research projects. At the same time, the level of insight reached in that specific area can prove a door-opener for employment in that field. SatComMedia Law optionThe newly introduced SatComMedia Law option allows students of the General European Law track to specialize in a specific field. A range of courses covering both the theoretical issues as well as case studies from practice allow in-depth learning in the field of the law relevant in satellite communications (such as telecommunications law, space law, public international law), electronic communications law including e-commerce law, media law, intellectual property law. Students of the track can either choose some of these courses or follow the complete programme in of the option in the third semester and deal with a related topic in their Master thesis in the fourth semester. In the second case students are certified having followed the option. With SES as the prime global satellite communications provider as well as a large number of e-commerce/Internet companies and the largest commercial broadcasting company in Europe having their seat in Luxembourg, this is an ideal setting for studying the up-to-date and highly relevant sector of law. Teaching is conducted by internal and external professors including guest professors specialized in communications and media law as well as practitioners from law firms and companies. The option includes possibilities for internships at relevant companies, law firms and also governmental institutions which can also be combined with writing the thesis in this area during the fourth semester. AdmissionStudents with a solid knowledge of European law will be admitted to this specialisation either upon successful completion of the first year (reaching 60 ECTS) at the University of Luxembourg or as external applicants with a previous four year study programme in law (equivalent to 240 ECTS). The application dossier should include a motivation letter that refers to the applicant’s interest in conducting research in an independent manner and if already decided a field of interest for the thesis. Although the SatComMedia Law option can also be chosen after enrolment and the start of the semester, applicants interested in following it, should mention it in their motivation letter.
