University hosts Moot Court Competition

The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg has the great honour to host, for the first time, one of the Regional Finals of the prestigious European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC) from 9 to 12 February 2012.

Twelve teams of law students representing universities from all around Europe and the US will compete at the Luxembourg Regional Final. Only one team will proceed to the All-European Final, the last stage of the competition. Additionally, one member from each team will participate in the individual competition, playing Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The teams will plead in front of acknowledged experts in European Union Law of different legal professions: academics and professionals alike.

What is a “Moot Court”? A “Moot Court” is a simulation of a legal proceeding dealing with different and very complex legal problems which arise from a fictitious case of topical interest in the respective field of law.

The ELMC is a simulated court proceeding in European Union Law held in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the CJEU. For more than 25 years the European Law Moot Court Society, an external organisation, based in Portugal, supports this prestigious competition.

The competition takes place annually and consists of three stages, namely one written stage and two oral stages. Through all of its phases the competition is bi-lingual: French and English being the official languages.

An ELMC team is composed by a minimum of three and maximum four students and their coach. The competition starts with the preparation of written submissions for both sides, applicant and defendant. In turn, based on the quality of their written submissions, the best 48 teams are invited to the Regional Final, which is the second stage of the competition. Four Regional Finals are held in February across the world and Luxembourg will be one of them.
