Frederik Herman is specializing in Social and Cultural Histories of Education, with a strong emphasis on histories of mentalitiesand educational ‘realities’, and socio-cultural and socio-material practices. His other research work concerns cultural learning, cultural literacy and the associated processes of heritage making, identity construction and community/nation building. He is presently co-editing a special issue on this topic for the International Journal of the History of Education ‘Paedagogica Historica’(2017).

Frederik completed his doctorate on “20th century school culture” at the University of Leuven (Belgium) in 2010. For two years (2011-2013) Frederik assumed teaching and coordinating tasks at KHBO, campus Brugge and CVO VTI Brugge (both teacher training colleges). He joined FLSHASE / ECCS / InES as a postdoctoral researcher on 1 March 2013. At present, Frederik is conducting post-doctoral research at the University of Luxembourg in the frame of the FNR-funded project “Fabricating Modern Societies: Industries of Reform as Educational Responses to Societal Challenges (ca. 1880-1930)” (FAMOSO / PI: Prof. Dr. habil. Karin Priem). In the frame of this project, his research interest include industrial entrepreneurship, early Labour Sciences (e.g. fatigue studies and psychophysiology) and professional orientation and vocational training at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Luxembourg and it’s neighbouring countries.

His publications so far have focused, among other things, on school culture(s), on ‘materialities of schooling’ (e.g. school architecture, classroom design, school equipment and furniture), and on the entanglement of bodies and objects/machines in the context of Labour Sciences and the rehabilitation of maimed soldiers (WWI) .
