Ira Plein is a PhD candidate at the University of Luxembourg, where she is collaborating in the project FAMOSO-2: Fabricating Modern Societies. Industries of Reform as Educational Responses to Societal Challenges (PI Karin Priem, InES).

Her dissertation Picturing Industrial Culture: Technologies of Visual Education (working title) investigates the medial (re)presentation of the steel industry and of industrial culture in Luxembourg (ca. 1890 - 1940).

Visual conveyors, such as film, photography, printed brochures and books, pieces of fine art or exhibitions will be analyzed with regards to mediation of life styles, the inclusion of industrial motifs into national media or the utilization of counter images, that employ industrial motifs for their political objectives. Thus, the analysis will comprise examples of visual media, produced by different players – (1) the steel industry, (2) the labour movement or (3) within a national context – and in respect of different addressed (or created) audiences (e.g. audiences abroad, corporate customers, workers and employees, the Luxembourgian society as such).

Ira Plein received a master of arts (Magistra Artium) in Art History and Media Studies at the University of Trier (2013).
