On 9 March the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management hosted a MIT SCALE-wide online event with representatives of the other four MIT SCALE centres worldwide: MIT CTL in the US, NISCI in China, CLI in Colombia and ZLC in Spain. Panellists shared their own experiences and discussed the topic: “The Covid pandemic and global supply chains: lessons from the MIT SCALE network”.
The LCL was delighted to host this first “pre-eXplore” event with more than 100 participants from over 100 countries who joined our superb line-up of speakers:
- Carla Rosen-Vacher, Outreach Communication Officer, University of Luxembourg (host)
- Benny Mantin, Director of the LCL, University of Luxembourg (moderator of the panel)
- Pascal Wolff, Assistant Professor, NISCI, China
- Susanna Val, Director ZLC, Spain
- César Becerra, Executive Manager CLI, Latin America
- Chris Caplice, Executive Director, MIT CTL USA
Our take-aways on the impacts on global supply chains are:
- Resilience is the key to overcoming challenges of a crisis (as Prof. Yossi Sheffi of MIT CTL wrote in his two books following 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis)
- More rapid thinking / decision-making
- Better adaptation to change / volatility
- Network design is more tactical
- ESG: environment/social/governance also adapted; sustainability grew in importance
- JIT (just-in-time) is not over yet
- “reshoring” of supply chains is in progress
- Collaboration and connectivity are key
