The framework governing the social impacts along the supply chain has been evolving rapidly. In 2011, the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights recognised that businesses have a responsibility to respect human and environmental rights in operations and supply chains. Since then, both businesses and governments around the world have been grappling with how to implement the principles in an effective and cost-conscious way. While initially the focus was on voluntary measures and reporting only requirements, recently the attention has shifted towards mandatory human rights due diligence.
In particular, 2020 has been a remarkable year where regional level legislative developments accelerated. In this webinar we will discuss the growing imperative to address human rights and environmental abuses in the supply chain, current and emerging regulation in this space, and engage with how some businesses are already proactively addressing these issues. We will conclude with future thinking discussion on what’s coming down the line and how best to prepare.
Meet our speakers:
Dr. Alexis Bateman is a Research Scientist and Director of MIT Sustainable Supply chains. MIT Sustainable Supply Chains brings together researchers from across MIT to advance supply chain sustainability, engaging on educational initiatives, research with industrial partners, and outreach around supply chain sustainability. Her research has been featured in numerous academic and industry outlets including Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Sloan Management Review, Supply Chain Management Review, and many others.
Dr. Başak Bağlayan is a post-doctoral researcher in fundamental rights at the University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance. She is specialised in international human rights law and in business and human rights. She acts as an independent expert adviser to the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs on the latter topic.
Grace Barrasso is Head of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainable Development at ArcelorMittal Mining.
Dr. Perry Dimmer is currently Head of Supply Chain & Logistics and CIO of ArcelorMittal Belval&Differdange. Perry Dimmer started his career in 1999 with Pricewaterhouse-Coopers (PWC) Zurich as senior consultant in demand and supply planning before joining in 2003 Nestle CH in Vevey as IT lead demand/supply planning and purchasing. In 2005, he joins the ArcelorMittal Group where he hold executive positions in Logistics, Sales and Systems & processes. In 2016 he was nominated to his current positions and as from 2018 he also leads the IT development of the Luxembourgish Long sites as CIO AM Belval&Diferdange. Perry Dimmer holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland and a postgraduate Master’s degree as Commercial Engineer STV AKAD Zurich.
Mari-lou Dupont is a senior manager at the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. She is leading the Action Platform on Decent Work in Global Supply Chains, a group of multinational enterprises and partners committed to take action and develop tools to improve working conditions and human rights in their supply chains. Mari-lou joined the UN Global Compact in 2018 after working as a legal expert at the OECD supporting the responsible business conduct workstream. She has also advised French business associations on the applicability of the French Duty of Vigilance Law. A lawyer by training, she worked alongside Canadian indigenous communities advocating for rights and sustainable development.
Mari-lou holds a Law Degree from the University of Montreal/York University as well as a Degree in anthropology from the University of Montreal/Lund University. She is a member of the Quebec Bar and has successfully completed her equivalence to practice law in France.
