Four University of Luxembourg doctoral researchers were officially presented with the Pierre Werner Scholarship during a ceremony hosted by the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance on 24 October 2022.

The Fondation Pierre Werner, under the aegis of the Fondation de Luxembourg, seeks to perpetuate the life’s work of Luxembourg Prime Minister and architect of Europe, Pierre Werner by supporting research projects, studies, and conferences related to European unification, monetary issues, democracy or human rights, in any country of the European continent. As such, the foundation, presided by former Finance Minister Luc Frieden, offers each year four scholarships to European doctoral researchers in the fields of law, economics, finance and political sciences at the University of Luxembourg.

The laureates are pre-selected by a committee of University of Luxembourg professors with the final decision made by the management committee of the Fondation Pierre Werner. All 2022 laureates demonstrated both impressive past academic achievements and promising doctoral research into topics of European relevance.

At the event, participants were welcomed by Dean Katalin Ligeti who highlighted the role that today’s researchers will play in maintaining European values, such as the rule of law, democracy and respect for human rights, in an uncertain political future. She congratulated the students and reminded them that they will become tomorrow’s decision-makers. Mr. Frieden, building on Prof. Ligeti’s welcome, congratulated the winners, shared the goals and purpose of the Fondation Pierre Werner and explained how the laureates’ work contributes to the larger ideal of an integrated Europe.

During the ceremony, all laureates were invited to give a short presentation of their ongoing research to members of the University, members of the Fondation Pierre Werner and the Fondation de Luxembourg before receiving a certificate presented by Fondation de Luxembourg Director General, Tonika Hirdman. The event concluded with a few words from Prof. Ligeti and a celebratory cocktail where the laureates had the opportunity to exchange with foundation members, including members of the Werner family.
