The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg is proud to announce that PhD candidate (from DTU REMS II), Angelica Fernandez, was selected to participate as a fellow in the “Ethics of Digitalization” project.
This project aims to address the questions on how artificial intelligence and algorithms work and provide proposals for policy actions. The Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier is patron of this project. Taking place at Bellevue Palace on 17 August 2020, the kick-off conference was a high-level and well-attended event. Angelica Fernandez was selected as a rapporteur for one of the 4 expert working groups, which presented key outcomes of the discussions to the President.
“I am excited about this great opportunity to connect research with political impact”, says Fernandez, “it is amazing that the HIIG has made it possible for an international interdisciplinary group to work under these circumstances”.
PhD supervisor Prof. Mark Cole also commented on this opportunity, “It is a remarkable step that Angelica was selected for this already after her first year as PhD student and underlines the relevance of her own AI-related PhD research theme”.
The project continues with a research sprint. It is a unique opportunity for scholars to create political impact and join an interdisciplinary scientific community working on the pressing issues related to platform governance. Fernandez is participating in the first research sprint until November, which will focus on AI and platform governance. “The format of the research sprint allows you to gain interdisciplinary insight into your area of expertise while contributing to a collective final output”, Fernandez explains, “moreover, you benefit from access to the HIIG scientific research team and private stakeholders working on these issues. So far it has been a very engaging and knowledge-rich experience”.
The project is led by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), in collaboration with the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society (BKC) at Harvard University, and the Digital Asia Hub (DAH).
