Can you tell us a little more about yourself?

My name is Julie, I am 27 years old. I am Luxembourgish and I am currently finishing my Master of Science in Finance and Economics – Financial Economics track. I already have a Master in Financial Mathematics and a Bachelor in Mathematics, all accomplished at the University of Luxembourg. My greatest passion is playing the trombone and going to concerts and I have always enjoyed watching crime movies.

Could give us some details about your internship and the company you worked for?

I did an internship at the Police Lëtzebuerg / Service de Police Judiciaire, in the department of Economic and Financial Crime (Eco/Fin), for 4 months, in the final semester of the Master programme.

What were your tasks?

I could do similar tasks as real police agents: I was allowed to participate in house searches and to assist to interrogations. Moreover, I did some research online, wrote a few reports and I even had the chance to analyse a mobile phone. Additionally, my supervisor organised some excursions, for example a guided tour of the scientific police laboratories and a close inspection of a police helicopter.

How did the internship enable you to put in practice what you learnt during your study program?

In general, I could apply some of my knowledge about the functioning of banks and other financial institutions, but I also took advantage of my acquired skills in Mathematics. Aditionally, I made use of my Excel skills to insert graphs and tables into reports.

What will you remember from the internship? Anything unusual or that was really enriching / interesting / fun fact?

The atmosphere was very positive and relaxed, and my colleagues were always willing to help me. I also appreciated that I could work all the time on-site despite the Covid pandemic.

Moreover, I found it very interesting to dive into the world of law and justice, which was completely new to me. I particularly enjoyed assisting to a public hearing and to a tour of the Court of Justice of Luxembourg.

In general, the internship was a great experience for me, and I would absolutely recommend doing such an internship to other interested students.

Could the police be a possible career path for you?

Definitely. The main reason why I wanted to do this internship was that I have always been interested in the work of the Police, so this was a perfect occasion to find out if I enjoy this job as much as I have always imagined. And indeed, I noticed that it is a very diversified job, so that I intend to apply for a position as financial investigator as soon as possible.
