The University of Luxembourg’s Moot Court programme headed by Associate Professor Katerina Pantazatou officially kicked off on Thursday, 14 January with an online event bringing together students, coaches, professors and representatives from partner, Clifford Chance Luxembourg.

Steve Jacoby, Clifford Chance Office Managing Partner, welcomed the 36 students and student coaches with a few words of encouragement, urging Moot court participants to take full advantage of this season, which will more than likely be conducted 100% remotely, and develop additional skills in communication and teamwork. “This year is different,” said Mr. Jacoby, “It will give you the opportunity to use different skills.” Mr. Jacoby also touched on another benefit of the programme, adding, “Moot court competitions allow the University to shine, beyond Luxembourg and even beyond Europe.”

Prof. Herwig Hofmann, Head of the Department of Law thanked Clifford Chance for supporting the University’s teams. He especially thanked the practicing lawyers who donate their time and expertise to enriching the experience for the students. “Mooting is a fantastic exercise”, said Prof. Hofmann, “It bridges the gap between theory and practice.”

Associate Professor Pantazatou introduced the accomplishments of the previous Moot Court seasons which counted many successes, including placements in the final rounds. Prof. Pantazatou further explained that the current COIVD-crisis has not slowed the programme down, “In 2021, the University of Luxembourg will host eight Moot Court teams. This is a record number for the University.” She thanked this year’s participants for taking up the special challenge that this year’s remote competitions will present.

The group then separated into breakout sessions where each Moot Court team could meet and network with the Clifford Chance lawyers who will be accompanying them through the 2021 season.

We wish our Moot Court teams a great start and much success!
