The University of Luxembourg welcomed over 1,000 new students on its traditional Welcome Day, on 16 September, on Belval Campus.
The annual Welcome Day is an enjoyable opportunity for new students to discover campus life, settle into their new environment and meet fellow students.
While the University is always very keen on welcoming its new students in a direct and personal approach, part of the official welcome ceremony was conveyed online, due to COVID-19-related sanitary restrictions. The welcome event was organised under the safety rules of the Luxembourg CovidCheck procedure to ensure a safe Welcome Day for all participants.
The Welcome Day 2021 hosted mainly new Bachelor and Master students, who were treated to a free lunch and a Welcome pack containing useful and fun items.
Lunch time was an opportunity to collect some students’ impressions on this first campus day.
“We feel privileged to be able to study in the very heart of Europe,” new students Takeru and Akari said. Both students are enrolled in a one-year student exchange with the Waseda University of Tokyo, and chose the University of Luxembourg to complete their Bachelor in European Cultures.
Charlyne and Ines have both completed their high school education in neighbouring France, but were looking for a modern university offering academic courses in English. “We very much like the idea of studying in such a dynamic and young university.” Both were born in 2003, the year the University of Luxembourg was created.
Sasha came from Minsk (Belarus) to complete her Master in Integrated Systems Biology (MISB). In the course of the Bachelor studies, she was involved in a joint project on cancer research with the Luxembourg Institute of Health and was therefore particularly excited to pursue her Master studies in Luxembourg. “It is a chance to study here, because the medical studies level is very high,” she emphasised.
On the campus, information stands manned by staff members, student volunteers and members of student associations welcomed newcomers to various university services and activities. Student services such as Admission & Accommodation and the Office of Student Life, as well as the Student Delegation and the IT Helpdesk for Students were present to provide information to newcomers.
In addition to the information stands, guided tours organised by student associations allowed visitors to discover the various venues on the campus.
The Welcome Day is followed by a Welcome Week from 20-23 September on Belval Campus, during which various University services will continue to present themselves. The Welcome Week programme is available on welcomeday.uni.lu.
