The UniGR-Center for Border Studies (UniGR-CBS) in the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning will host two international guest scholars in September and October 2021. During their stay, they will conduct research on the Covid-19 border closures at the German-Polish border and on Europeanization processes in the context of the resurgence of borders.
Elżbieta Opiłowska (Center for Regional and Borderlands Studies, University of Wroclaw)
Elżbieta Opiłowska is Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Regional and Borderlands Studies at University of Wroclaw, Poland. She will spend the months of July and September at University of Luxembourg. The projects during her visit are to develop the cooperation with the UniGR-Center for Border Studies and to conduct research on the strategies of cross-border institutional actors in the context of Covid-19 (re)bordering processes.

Jussi P. Laine (Karelian Institute, University of Eastern Finland)
Jussi P. Laine is the President of the Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS) and associate professor of multidisciplinary border studies at the Karelian Institute of the University of Eastern Finland. By background, Laine is a human geographer, yet in his approach to borders he combines influences from international relations and geopolitics, political sociology, history, anthropology, and psychology. Within border studies he seeks to explore the multiscalar production of borders and bring a critical perspective to bear on the relationship between state, territory, citizenship, and identity construction.

The UniGR-Center for Border Studies as an interregional competence center supports the short-term mobility of border researchers at its six UniGR partner universities. With the funding of the Interreg VA Greater Region Program, more than 10 researchers from Europe and the USA come in the Greater Region in 2021 to develop international research and cooperation in border studies.
