The students of the Master in Legislative Studies of the University of Luxembourg and the doctoral researchers supervised by Professor Philippe Poirier, Holder of the Chair of Legislative Studies, spent a study day at the European Parliament in Brussels on 30 June 30 2022.

After visiting the Parliament, including its library and hemicycle, 24 students and researchers had a questions-and-answers session with Luxembourgish MEPs Tilly Metz (Greens), Isabel Wiseler-Lima (EPP), and Charles Goerens (Renew Europe). The debated issues included the state of democracy and the rule of law in the European Union, the role of the European Parliament and the MEPs on human rights and environmental protection, the current situation in Ukraine, and the relationship between MEPs and their political parties back in Luxembourg. Afterwards, the University of Luxembourg group enjoyed lunch with the three MEPs. In the afternoon, the students joined the Constitutional Affairs committee meeting in the Parliament.

Afterwards, European Parliament Secretary-General Klaus Welle and his Deputy Head of Cabinet Franck Débié received the Chaire’s doctoral researchers Agnes Darabos, Laura Gil-Besada, Sorina Carstea, Alessio Belli, Aloïs Toyane and Nicolas Duca. The PhD researchers presented their topics to Mr Welle and Mr Débié, who offered valuable suggestions.

This visit to the European Parliament represents a step further in the collaboration between the Parliament and the Chair of Legislative Studies, now formalised through a convention. During the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year, Secretary-General Klaus Welle will offer a course on the politics of the European Parliament to 2nd year students of the Master in Legislative Studies. Additionally, on 1 and 2 December 2022, the European Parliament in Luxembourg will host a conference organised by the Chair of Legislative Studies on parliamentary diplomacy and its influence on norm diffusion.
