Starting September 2021, the University of Luxembourg will offer a Bachelor in Music Education to students seeking a university education to become a music teacher.
This new bachelor will be taught in four languages and is designed for students who aim to work in Luxembourg or the Greater Region. Future graduates will be competent to work in public and private music education (music academies (or conservatoire) and schools) or enrol in a master programme.
The study programme was created in collaboration with the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville d’Esch-sur-Alzette, the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg and the Conservatoire de Musique du Nord. The University will ensure teaching in musicology and music teaching while the conservatoires will be in charge of music and instrumental education. This will allow students to continue their musical training.
During the 1st semester, students chose a specialisation among three options: Instrumental or vocal training, Musical education or Introduction to music. A mobility semester abroad, which is compulsory for bachelor students at the University of Luxembourg, is scheduled for the 5th semester. A strong element of the bachelor is the practical experience part, which begins during the first semester and evolves progressively during the following semesters.
This bachelor is a considerable milestone in the process of developing the competence framework for the profession of music teacher. It will put emphasis on pedagogical training in addition to the musical education, and offer students a high-quality education adapted to standards international.
The bachelor’s programme to train pedagogical skills is identical to those of the Bachelor in educational sciences. It meets the expectations of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth and corresponds to international professional standards.

“This bachelor completes a line-up of bachelor and lifelong learning degrees for teachers”, explains Prof. Catherine Léglu, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at the University. “Education has always been a research and teaching priority at the University and we will continue to invest in the training of teachers for the benefit of society.”
“I am particularly glad that the University of Luxembourg organises this new study programme in collaboration with the country’s three music academies, to provide a national response to the needs of the music education sector.
