The University of Luxembourg mourns the loss of Prof. Dr Dieter Ferring, founding member of the University of Luxembourg and renowned psychologist. Prof. Dr Dieter Ferring passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59 years.

Dieter Ferring was a founder member of the University of Luxembourg and one of the Faculty’s most prominent researchers. As an internationally renowned developmental psychologist, he made a major contribution to the University of Luxembourg’s strong reputation for research in psychology and social psychology. Dieter Ferring was the founder and director of INSIDE, which under his leadership became one of the University’s most successful research units. He also directed the Master’s in Gerontology and the Institute for Research on Generations and Family.

In his academic research, Dieter Ferring was committed both to acquiring new knowledge and to applying that knowledge for the benefit of society as a whole. A central focus of his research was social issues in Luxembourg, and he earned particular recognition for his work in this field. Dieter Ferring was not only a renowned scholar but also a highly respected and valued colleague. His reputation extended beyond the confines of his discipline and the University. His opinion carried weight; he was often approached for advice, and he was much appreciated for his kind and generous manner. He will be greatly missed.

We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and especially to his wife and son.

On behalf of the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education,

Georg Mein (Dean)
