Alex Domin joined the Research Group „Self-regulation and Health” at the Institute for Health and Behaviour (Department of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences) as a Doctoral researcher in September 2017. He is currently working on the project “Mobile Application for Physical Activity: Development of a theory-based, personalized mHealth intervention for adolescents” (MAPA), supervised by Prof. Claus Vögele, Prof. Daniel Theisen (Luxembourg Institute of Health) and Prof. Donna Spruijt-Metz (University of Southern California).

His main research areas include:

  • mHealth
  • Health Psychology
  • Sport Psychology
  • Behavioural Medicine
  • Physiology
  • Public Health Policies

In his Master thesis research, he explored levels of involvement of Luxembourgish pupils in extracurricular physical activities through the cross-cultural comparison with the Russian Federation. The comparison of differences between the two countries was conducted through comparative discourse analysis in several dimensions: curriculum, national plans for promotion of extracurricular physical activities, statistical and policy documentation.
His PhD project aims at enriching the theoretical basis for physical activity-related mobile applications by using systematic approach in the implementation of behaviour change techniques and intervention personalization using machine-learning algorithms combined with contextually tailored suggestions. The overall aim of this project is to explore the possibility of enhancing physical activity participation in adolescents using mHealth interventions (smartphone application and a wrist-worn activity tracker). The objective is to identify the most effective behavioural change techniques that can be used in the application and to understand, how these behavioural change techniques should be properly implemented and combined. This will be done through the application of the innovative research design: a micro-randomized optimization trial.
