14/12/2015 – In the seventh edition of the IDENT2 Working Papers, Rachel Reckinger presents the empirical auto-evaluation of the IDENT2-research project in both quantitative and qualitative terms and gives best-practice recommendations for cross-disciplinary collaborations. 17/11/2015 – Jos Schnurer considers the book with the same name as a successful example of European regional research. The pedagogue qualifies the project from the University of Luxembourg, out of which the publication emerged, as “an illustration of the way how spaces and identities in border regions can be researched”. 10/11/2015 – Carlo Lejeune publishes a review about the interdisciplinary volume “Räume und Identitäten in Grenzregionen. Politiken – Medien – Subjekte” in the most recent edition of Rheinische Vierteljahresblätter (79, 2015). The Belgian historian stresses the stringent structure and excellent readability of the anthology and qualifies its research results as a well-grounded and indispensable basis for research on border studies. 07/07/2015 – Julia Lossau discusses the book “Räume und Identitäten in Grenzregionen. Politiken – Medien – Subjekte” in the most recent edition of the Luxembourgish scientific journal Hémecht. According to her, the volume, which was published in 2014, distinguishes itself by a “multitude of disciplinary interests and perspectives” and offers “a wealth of theoretical and practical stimulations”. Press review – Living beyond the border

14/04/2014 – E. Boesen, G. Schnuer and C. Wille are investigating the phenomenon of cross-border residential migration as part of the IDENT2-project. In an interview with the journalist W. Trapp, Boesen and Schnuer report on some of the research findings. The article was published on 17 April 2014 in the newspaper Tageblatt.

Article - De la banalité des lieux-cyborgs

02/04/2014 – The article “De l’insoutenable banalité des lieux-cyborgs. Les stations-essence dans l’imaginaire de l’extrême contemporain” by S. Kmec and A. Prüm, which arose out of IDENT2, has been accepted for the anthology “Ville infectée, ville déshumanisée” (edited by S. Freyermuth, J.F. Bonnot and T. Obergöker). It will be published in 2014 by Peter Lang Verlag.

18/03/2014 – As part of a lecture series, on 24 April Elena Kreutzer will be giving a lecture on cross-border media coverage. She will also be presenting IDENT2 findings.

Lecture: Living beyond the border

18/03/2014 – On 10 April, Elisabeth Boesen and Gregor Schnuer will be speaking about cross-border residential migration in the Greater Region. IDENT2 findings will also be presented as part of this lecture.

Work on manuscript completed

07/03/2014 – Following an intensive editing and proofreading phase, the manuscript of the IDENT2 final publication has been delivered to the publishing house transcript. The title has already been set: ‘Räume und Identitäten in Grenzregionen. Politiken – Medien – Subjekte’ (‘Spaces and Identities in Border Regions. Politics – Media – Subjects’, Bielefeld: transcript 2014).

07/03/2014 – The life worlds of border crossers are anchored in multiple countries. The ways in which they spatially organise their everyday life and where they feel they belong form the content of C. Wille’s latest contribution.

CB-RES project second workshop

24/02/2014 – The CB-RES project deals with the phenomenon of ‘cross-border residential mobility’. On 26/02, stock is to be taken of the previous year of research as part of the second project workshop. Gregor Schnuer and Christian Wille report on the collaboration between CB-RES and IDENT2.

Beginning of lecture series on the SaarLorLux Greater Region

20/02/2014 – The introductory lecture ‘The SaarLorLux Greater Region: reality of life or political construction?’ by Christian Wille opens the lecture series of the same name. Eleven academics from a variety of disciplines will discuss the realities of life and the cooperation connections in the SaarLorLux Greater Region.

27/01/2014 – The (im-)possibility of cross-border identities is discussed by Christian Wille in his latest contribution, where he demonstrates that borders are essential for identities and their study in border regions.

New member of staff

16/01/2014 – Since2014, Rouven Hehlert has been assisting IDENT2 project coordination on behalf of Rachel Reckinger. Rouven Hehlert is a historian, and is currently working on a dissertation examining extreme weather events in the High Middle Ages in the region between the Rhine and the Maas.

Final stage

12/12/2013 – IDENT2 is approaching the final stage. We are currently working on the production of the book and its publication.

02/12/2013 – The publication for the University’s 10th anniversary focuses on it’s developments and specificities are being thematized.  Christian Wille wrote an article about the university as space.

02/12/2013 – Since November IDENT2 employs a new student assistant. From now on, Peggy Jacobs, master student in Geography and Spatial Planning, supports the project coordination.

IDENT2-projects: Prime examples for scientific collaboration

13/11/2013 – The publication for the 10th anniversary presents developments and characteristics of the young university. This includes the IDENT2-project (2011-2014) and its predecessor IDENT1 (2007-2010), which are characterized as “prime examples of scientific collaboration.”

Article: Characteristics of border regions

14/10/2013 – Multi-local ways of living are prevalent those days. In the latest issue of the journal “Itinera” various forms of multi-local ways of living and working are being discussed. Christian Wille presents theoretical and conceptual considerations regarding border regions as well as empirical evidence on the nature of the cross-border commuter.

Lecture : Constructions of identity in the Greater Region

10/10/2013 – Elisabeth Boesen, Gregor Schnuer and Christian Wille are presenting their research results concerning the constructions of identity in the Greater Region. They will present their talk at the international conference European Culture (October 24th until October 26th) at the University of Catalonia (Barcelona), panel: “Encounters with difference in European borderlands”.

01/10/2013 – On 16th October, experts from the Greater Region will discuss sociocultural challenges of cross-border work in a round table discussion entitled Living and working across borders. Christian Wille introduces to the discussion.

Internal IDENT2-Colloquium

02/09/2013 – On 14th and 15th October, a common IDENT2-colloquium will take place. During the two-day event, the 35 members of the project will present each other their research results and will discuss within an interdisciplinary dialogue. Following the colloquium, the editorial phase to prepare the final IDENT2-publication will begin.

Conference Presentation : Everyday Practices of Sustainable Food Choices

29/08/2013 – Rachel Reckinger presented the first results of her IDENT2-study. She presented a paper entitled “Implicit Competence and Responsibility in Everyday Practices of Sustainable Food Choices“ at the international conference Crisis, Critique and Change (August 28th until August 31th) of the European Sociological Association, taking place at the University of Turin.

Sixth Edition of the IDENT2 Working Papers: space from a praxeological perspective

24/06/2013 – In the sixth edition of the IDENT2 Working papers, Christian Wille analyses the relation between praxeological and spatial approaches and how these could be transferred into a heuristic tool for research in cultural studies. Fifth Edition of the IDENT2 Working Papers: lieux-cyborgs

17/06/2013 – In the fith edition of the IDENT2 Working papers ("De l’insoutenable banalité des lieux-cyborgs. Les stations-essence dans l’imaginaire de l’extrême contemporain") Sonja Kmec and Agnès Prüm examine film representations of gaz stations. Here the anonymous everyday routine of a "non-place" (M. Augé) meets the creative appropriation by its users, resulting in new spatial constellations. Download

06/05/2013 – In her article “Der Blick auf den Stahl – Fortschritt und Modernismus in der luxemburgischen Lyrik 1900-1940“ in Hémecht (2013, issue 1, p. 27-50), Anne-Marie Millim investigates the relationship between the direction of the poetic gaze and the ontological anchoring of the poet.

Lecture: Residential Migration within the luxembourgish-german border region

24/04/2013 – Elisabeth Boesen, Gregor Schnuer and Christian Wille are presenting the first results of their IDENT2-study on June 13th. They will present their talk entitled “Urbanität im ländlichen Raum am Beispiel von Wohnmigration im deutsch-luxemburgischen Grenzraum“ at the international conference Migration und Urbanität (June 13th until June 15th) at the University of Basel.

Essay:  Raumdeutungen – Espaces revisités

18/04/2013 – Borders have become more permeable and the national space is not the point of reference anymore. Through this relativisation, space is not losing his importance, but new possibilities of dealing with space can be established. Christian Wille accentuates this perspective within his latest essay „Raumdeutungen / Espaces revisités“, which discusses the relation of border and space. The text was published in the book Au Centre de l’Europe – Im Reich der Mitte 2.

Article: Wege zur vinophilen Kennerschaft.

15/04/2013 – In her article Wege zur vinophilen Kennerschaft. Die Verschränkung von Normen und deren Aneignungen beim Weinkonsum in Mitteilungen. Internationaler Arbeitskreis für Kulturforschung des Essens. (2013, Heft 20, p. 18-23), Rachel Reckinger analyses current discursive practices about wine connoiseurship in Luxembourg. The proposed micro-sociological approach focuses on the discursive practice’s inherent normativity and its everyday appropriations.

Ten external transcriptors employed

15/04/2013 – In order to permit a quick start of the qualitative data’s analysis, ten external transcriptors are employed. They master the following languages: Luxembourgish, German, French, English.

Lecture: Zur Bedeutung der Familie auf Grabmonumenten der Gallia Belgica

10/04/2013 – Andrea Binsfeld is presenting the first results of her IDENT2 study on May 28th. Her lecture entitled “Zur Bedeutung der Familie auf Grabmonumenten der Gallia Belgica“ at the colloquium „Probleme des römischen Westens“ is about space- and identity constructions analysed in representations of family life on romanic grave monuments of the 2nd and 3rd century. Qualitative Empirical Survey has begun

25/03/2013 - Inhabitants of Luxembourg are questioned via qualitative interviews as part of IDENT2. The field phase with the quadrilingual interview guideline has just begun.

IDENT2 Study Trip

13/03/2013 – The IDENT2 team visits the iLux – identities in Luxembourg exhibition in the Musée Dräi Eechelen. Sonja Kmec and Gianna Thommes offer an expert guided tour of this exhibition displaying many of the results of the first IDENT project (2007-2010).

10/03/2013 – Luc Belling is presenting the first results of his IDENT2 case study on March 21st. He will present a talk entitled “Constructing identity with digital walls:  a sociolinguistic case study of Luxembourgish teenagers on Facebook” at the international conference Youth 2.0 – Connecting, Sharing and Empowering ? Workshop: Qualitative Data Analysis

27/02/2013 – As part of the IDENT2 project, the data gained from qualitative interviews is analysed using MAXQDA software. An external instructor is invited to provide an introduction to the software.

IDENT2 introduces oneself

15/02/2013 – In the course of the Workshop of the FNR-Project Cross border residence. Identity experience and integration processes in the Greater Region, Christian Wille presents the IDENT2-Project. Because both research projects focus on border areas, possibilities of cooperation will be discussed.

05/12/2012 – The report on the IDENT2 conference Space and Identity as a Social Practice is published on H-Soz-u-Kult, an online specialist forum for social and cultural scientists, which disseminates scholarly reports and publications.

Workshop: Qualitative Interviews

05/12/2012 – Qualitative interviews are being held with inhabitants of Luxembourg and the neighbouring region as part of the IDENT2 project. Project members get together in a workshop on the topic of ‘qualitative interview and interview conduct’ by way of preparation.

23/11/2012 – The workshop discussion ‘interdisciplinary cooperation: experiences – challenges – strategies’ is held on 23rd November. The political scientist Ruth Zimmerling (University of Mainz) is invited to participate in the debate.

‘Prix de la Meilleure Thèse’

22/11/2012 – Christian Wille is awarded second prize at the University of Luxembourg’s Prix de la meilleure thèse for his study on border crossers in the Greater Region. The dissertation prize was awarded by the Amis de l’Université for the first time.

15/11/2012 - Agnès Prüm and Sonja Kmec are presenting the first results of their IDENT2-studies on November 23. Book Presentation: Parler Vin

08/11/2012 – It’s trendy to be a wine connoisseur – but it isn’t easy. How do wine beginners gain expert knowledge? Rachel Reckinger, sociologist and ethnologist at the University of Luxembourg, explores this question in her new book Parler Vin. Entre norms et appropriations. She analyses encounters between wine experts and wine beginners who would like to become wine connoisseurs, and asks them about their expectations, experiences and methods. The book was presented to an interested audience at the Alinéa bookshop  alongside a selection of wines.

Online Literature Database

09/10/2012 – The members of IDENT2 have been working with an online literature database since October 2012. The 1,500 entries primarily deal with the topics of identity and spaces, and are being continually expanded.

New Book Release: Parler Vin

28/09/2012 – The monograph Parler Vin. Entre Normes et Appropriations has just been released. Rachel Reckinger analyses encounters between wine experts and wine beginners who would like to become wine connoisseurs. The study is aimed at anyone interested into identity-related aspects of wine consumption. This book, with a foreword by Jean-Pierre Corbeau, was published in the series « Tables des Hommes »

Lecture on the Topic of Identity

10/10/2012 – A series of lectures are held as part of the iLux – identities in Luxembourg exhibition in the Musée Dräi Eechelen. Sonja Kmec discusses questions of identity construction under the title of ‘Baustelle Identität. Konstruktion von Identität aus historischer, kultureller und sozialer Perspektive’.

IDENT2 Working Papers Online

10/10/2012 – The first issue of the new IDENT2 Working Papers series is published. Its authors explain the fundamental theoretical/conceptual premises of the project.

Team Meeting: Prelude to the New Semester

03/10/2012 – After the summer break, the project participants get together to decide on the next common steps to be taken. This meeting focuses particularly on the empirical work which will continue into the spring of 2013.

01/10/2012 – Around 70 projects at the University of Luxembourg focus on social issues in Luxembourg, among which identity is a central focus. In an interview on Radio 100.7, Sonja Kmec and Jeanne Glesener speak about questions of identity and social development.

Project Presentation at  an International Conference

06/09/2012 – Markus Hesse presents the IDENT2 project at the international conference Unpacking Cross-Border Governance. This event, organised by the CEPS/INSTEAD research institute, focuses on bordering processes as regionalisation processes.

IDENT2 in Interview on Radio 100.7

07/08/2012 – Sonja Kmec, Rachel Reckinger and Christian Wille report on the goals and expected results of the IDENT2 project in a radio interview. They also present the results of the previous IDENT project, which can be read in a book or viewed at a public exhibition.

Exhibition opening: iLux – Identities in Luxembourg

13/07/2012 – The exhibition iLux – Identities in Luxembourg opens on 13th July. This temporary  exhibition at the ‘Musée Dräi Eechelen – forteresse, histoire, identités’ displays many of the results from the first IDENT project (2007-2010).

International IDENT2 Conference

12-13/07/2012 – The Spaces and Identities as Social Practices conference, organised as part of the project, is held on 12th and 13th July. The invited academic experts discuss conceptual/theoretical and methodological aspects of spatial and identity research.

06/07/2012 – The magazine Télécran publishes a dossier on the topic of identity in Luxembourg, where Sonja Kmec, Rachel Reckinger and Christian Wille report on the IDENT2 project and outline the expected results.

14-16/06/2012 – Heike Mauer is presenting the first results of her IDENT2 study on June 15th. She will present her talk entitled „‘Sie möchten mir doch bitte die Erlaubnis geben nur einen kleinen Besuch zu machen nach Luxemburg.‘ Prostitution und Migration 1900-1939” at the international conference Migration und Demokratie, amongst others organised by the „Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines“ (CDMH) (Luxembourg) and the „Institut für Regional- und Migrationsforschung“ (IRM) (Germany).

Workshop: Quantitative Data Collection

09/05/2012 – A quantitative survey of inhabitants of Luxembourg and the neighbouring region is planned for the IDENT2 project. A workshop run by colleagues from the adjoining research unit INSIDE is organised in order to help develop the questionnaire.

23/02/2012 – Handy IDENT2 bookmarks have just arrived from the printer’s. Instead of a flyer, these are designed to increase awareness of the IDENT2 project via a QR code and website address. IDENT2 bookmarks can be sent out on request.

Moodle Project Platform Set up

07/02/2012 – A platform is set up on Moodle for internal project communications. The work carried out in the working groups, outcomes from events and deadlines are recorded here and can be accessed at any time by the project members.

Project Website Online

24/01/2012 – The INDENT2 website has just been set up after an extended development phase. Offered in three languages, this website provides information on the objectives, focal points and structure of the project and also contains a download area.

IDENT2 Gains Support

15/01/2012 – From the beginning of the year onwards the project coordination receives support from a student employee, who maintains the literature database and helps with day-to-day business.

Team Meeting: Project Planning 2012

18/01/2012 – The project work plan for 2012 is discussed and collectively adopted at the beginning of the year. This includes preliminary discussions in preparation for the international conference in July.

Results of the Previous Project Published in French

28/10/2011 – The results of the previous project IDENT have just been published in French. The book entitled ‘Construire des identités au Luxembourg. Appropriations subjectives – Projections institutionnelles – Milieux socio-culturels is available in stores or directly from the publisher ‘Berg international’ (Paris).

Team Meeting: Case Studies

24/10/2011 – At the first team meeting, initial ideas for empirical case studies are discussed and defined more precisely. Their thematic grouping is a further step towards creating IDENT2 working groups.

Kick-Off Meeting

05/10/2011 – The project team first gets together on 5th October and finds an agreement on the first steps for future work plans and timetables. The aim is to develop collectively the empirical case studies to be treated in the project.
