Civil law rules on robotics

On 20 March 2017, Mrs. Mady Delvaux-Stehres, Luxembourgish Representative and Member of the European Parliament, gave a presentation at the University of Luxembourg about her resolution for civil law rules concerning artificial intelligence and robotics. About 30 participants followed the exciting and illuminating talk.

"Social assistive robots, cyber-physical systems in industry, and artificial intelligence are no longer a concept in science fiction", starts Mrs Mady Delvaux-Stehres. “We are living through a new industrial revolution and robotics is changing our society day by day. Any kind of artificial agents currently surpass existing laws and it is time to adapt civil rules and create robot regulations to face the new scenario”, she continues. 

During her speech, she mentioned two studies requested by the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs: the first study focuses on the future of European civil law rules in robotics from the legal and ethical perspectives whereas the second study highlights the potential benefits and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence in the society.

In addition, a fundamental discussion across European countries had already started about the massive inclusion of artificial intelligence and robotics in multidisciplinary environments like autonomous driving and flying, medicine, military and the industry itself. She also pointed out the request for a data privacy and a reliable management of personal data.  

Her talk ended with several explanations, examples, and personal viewpoints regarding standardisation initiatives, methodologies and responsibilities. Many raised questions and extensive answers completed the event. 

As a conclusion, exchanges were very fruitful between students, professors and researchers from different disciplines, which shows the growing interest in the field of law/ethics/artificial intelligence for robots.

This event is part of a series of distinguished lectures organised by the Interdisciplinary Lab for Intelligent and Adaptive Systems (ILIAS) within the Computer Science and Communications Research Unit (CSC).
