How to guarantee security in the realm of Big Data & Analytics?

This question was tackled during the second Information Security Education Day (ISED), which gathered around 40 participants on 13 May 2016 at Kirchberg campus. The event was co-organized by the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and sponsored by CLUSIL and SnT.

Every day, an increasing amount of digital data is generated and stored by a wide range of sources and devices (mobile phones, computers, sensors, cloud platforms, etc.), which represents a major challenge for the IT sector. In order to describe very large data sets that cannot be analysed and processed by traditional software tools, the term “Big data” was born some years ago.

Nowadays, advances in storage technologies allow collecting and storing huge amounts of data for a long time. As a result, new markets emerge and expand to valorise such data (internet of things, fintech, smart systems, etc.). However, security issues remain a sensitive topic when data are at stake. 

With international and well-known speakers, the Information Security Education Day was a great place to discuss this topic. Indeed, exchanges were very fruitful between researchers (University of Luxembourg, LIST), professional experts (CLUSIL, EBRC) and representatives from the government (CIRCL, CNPD, Security made in Lëtzebuerg).

From the academic viewpoint, Eric Dubois (LIST) presented some perspectives regarding business analytics for security risk management whereas Alex Biryukov (University of Luxembourg) described blockchain technologies used in different distributed ledgers."The last three years have seen a rapid growth in the area of digital currencies and distributed ledger solutions with different privacy and scalability properties. In this talk, I have described several potential use-cases for these new technologies as well as of our recent research results in this area like the study of security of Bitcoin and the design of the new proofs-of-work”, explained Alex Biryukov, Professor in Cryptography and Information Security at the University of Luxembourg.

To link both the academic and professional world, Radu State (SnT) and Eric Falk (Nexus group) recommended the use of Lambda Architectures for security monitoring. Alexandre Dulaunoy (CIRCL), Lionel Dupré (EBRC) and Alain Herrmann (CNPD) then emphasized three main challenges big data has to face, namely incident response, encryption and personal data protection. Finally, Pascal Steichen (Security made in Lëtzebuerg) moderated a round table entitled “Big data: reveal the unknown unknowns” with experts in the field.  

The audience, mainly composed of former and current students from the Master en management de la Sécurité des Systèmes d'Information (MSSI), really appreciated the quality and detail of the presentations as well as the experiences shared. "Reducing the gap between academic research and incident response is a critical step to improve techniques in order to fight cybercrimes. ISED provides a nice ground where this gap can be reduced by exchanging techniques between academics and practitioners in the information security field", added Alexandre Dulaunoy, Incident Management and Security Researcher at CIRCL.

Building on its success, the experience will be renewed next year with a new topic for the third Information Security Education Day (ISED).
