Master in Geography and Spatial Planning

Application requirements

This Master’s course is open to graduate students who are looking for additional training in the realm of spatial development theories and policy with spatial analysis together with the exploration of European and cross-border issues. The Master; in Geography and Spatial Planning is suitable for students who wish to develop their understanding of the current theoretical and policy debates in the field and build their knowledge of, and experience with, both quantitative and qualitative methods for geographical / planning research. The programme will either provide (1) a foundation for further doctoral research, and (2) the opportunity to enrich your knowledge and understanding. Both of which will lead into professional employment that contributes to resolving the many interdisciplinary geography and planning issues of modern society.

Potential applicants are expected to have an excellent Bachelor’s degree or qualification of equivalence in a relevant discipline (primarily (human) geography, spatial planning, architecture, urban studies, regional economics urban sociology or engineering). However, candidates with degrees covering other areas are also welcome to apply and maybe accepted if there is a demonstration of sufficient knowledge in the relevant fields. All candidates are expected to demonstrate how they fit our selection criteria by writing a motivation letter (see Main criteria for selection).

This is a competitive application process and candidates are evaluated by our admissions jury according to selection criteria listed below. Places are limited and potential candidates might be invited for an interview.

Language requirements

To successfully participate in this programme you must be able to demonstrate your proficiency in English.

Deadlines

Applications for all students for the academic year 2023/2024 open on 01-02-2023. We recommend that you apply as early as possible, as places in the programme are limited.

EU students:

Applications close on the 31-07-2023. Applications received after this date will not be processed.

Non-EU students:

Applications close on the 30-04-2023. Applications received after this date will not be processed.

Main criteria for selection

In addition to the evaluation of the usual documents required by the university administration and the registration office (SEVE), which are described in the section below (how to apply) the potential student must also submit a personal motivation letter in which you:
- Demonstrate your theoretical, conceptual and methodological knowledge in the field of geography, spatial planning and analysis.
- Outline the specific reasons, which led you to apply to the Master and indicate what you expect to achieve after its completion? (ie please explain your future professional ambitions).
- Demonstrate, with official certificates very good knowledge of English (written and spoken at least B2).
- Demonstrate practical experience in international/European research contexts (e.g. internships, BA theses) will be considered as an advantage.
- Describe the academic or professional work you have carried out previously which are related to the Master.
- Specify the reasons why you want to study in Luxembourg and at the University of Luxembourg.
- Please include in your motivation letter a description of an idea for a research project that you might like to explore within the framework of the Master programme (2 paragraphs).
- In addition, we would like a detailed explanation of any gaps in your education/work experience

This is a competitive application process and candidates are evaluated by our admissions jury according to the quality of your motivation letter, your CV, your academic performance, your language competencies and your reference letters.

How to apply

Application dossiers

Candidates must pre-register with the University of Luxembourg and complete an online application form here:

European students (deadline: 31 July 2023) or

non-European students (deadline: 30 April 2023).

The next step is to compile an application dossier. This should include: the signed copy of the application form, a CV, a motivation letter, 2 reference letters from your most recent supervisors (academic and/or professional) diploma/degree certificates, transcripts of records, proof of language competence and other documents applicants consider useful (e.g. internship reports, language certificates).

The application dossier should then submitted before the relevant deadlines.

Once the admission Jury has reached its final decision, students will be notified if they have been accepted, conditionally accepted, or rejected.

As student places are limited, it is recommended to send in application dossiers as early as possible.
