University of Luxembourg among the 180 best universities in the world

The University of Luxembourg climbed to position 178 among the best universities in the world in the latest edition of the renowned “Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings”, improving its performance in all categories compared to last year.

The University jumped 15 positions from place 193 in 2015 to finish 178th this year. The University of Luxembourg now ranks 86 among the European universities participating (compared to 99 in 2015). Furthermore, it was able to ascend to a joint first place for international outlook in the global ranking, which it shares with Qatar University, making it one of the most international universities worldwide. This category takes into account the number of international students, PhD students, researchers and academic and non-academic personnel into consideration, as well as the involvement of international co-authors in publications.


"I am delighted that we were again able to hold our ground and prove our ongoing performance," explained Rainer Klump, the president of the University of Luxembourg. "This ranking is another milestone on the way to permanently establishing the University of Luxembourg among the top positions internationally."

Improved performance in every category

The results of the THE World University Rankings 2016/2017, one of the most acclaimed university ranking worldwide, were announced online on 21 September 2016. The University of Luxembourg took part in the THE Rankings for the first time in 2015. In comparison to last year, it improved its performance in every category.

The THE World University Rankings evaluate the strengths of a university in the areas of teaching, research, international orientation, funding from industry and the number of mentions in specialist publications, based on 13 performance indicators.
