University achieves excellent 4th position worldwide among millennial universities

The University of Luxembourg ranks 17th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2019 that was published today (2018: rank 12).

The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings lists the world’s best universities that are not more than 50 years old. The 2019 ranking includes 351 universities, up from 250 in 2018.

In the subcategory of the “Millenial” universities (founded since the year 2000), the University of Luxembourg is ranked in an excellent 4th position of 64 universities worldwide.

The University achieved an overall score of 59.8 points, marginally lower than the 60.6 score in 2018 and higher than the scores achieved in 2017 and 2016. The strong proximity of universities in the vicinity of that score implies that even a small change in the score may translate into a shift of several places in the ranking.

“I am very pleased that the University of Luxembourg continues to be ranked among the leading young universities in the world. This ranking reflects the University’s drive for excellence in research and teaching, as well as in its international outlook. We are proud to remain well positioned in an increasingly competitive environment,” states Stéphane Pallage, Rector of the University of Luxembourg.

The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings table uses evaluation criteria that are broadly similar to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (which lists universities independently of their age). However, these criteria are adjusted in order to give less weight to the criterion of reputation.

The performance indicators measure the university’s teaching (learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), its international outlook (staff, students and research) and its industry income. The newest ranking is based on data from 2016.
