University Open Day – The LCSB opens the doors of its labs!

    Life Sciences & Medicine

On 18 March, the University of Luxembourg organises its yearly Open Day, during which prospective students, parents and the general public can explore the campus. It will be the perfect opportunity to discover the university’s study programmes and its interdisciplinary research centres, to meet other students and visit facilities of Campus Belval.

On this occasion, the LCSB invites you to take a look behind the scenes. If you would like to learn more about biomedical research and find out what a laboratory looks like, join us for a guided tour in the LCSB wet labs!

Researchers from different teams will talk about their work on neurodegenerative diseases and show visitors how they study the human brain, using high-tech equipment, model organisms such as yeasts and 3D cell cultures. Three lab tours are available for reservation. Each of them will take place twice during the day – in the morning at 11:30 and in the afternoon at 14:00 – and the visits will be carried out in different languages. Check out the detailed descriptions and schedule below and book online!

  • Discover brain organoids

Visit the lab of the Developmental and Cellular Biology group to learn how they generate three-dimensional cell cultures to study neurodegenerative diseases. These brain organoids are derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells and help researchers understand mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level.

11h30-12h30 – Lab tour in French

14h-15h – Lab tour in German

  • Neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s disease

Visit the lab of the Neuroinflammation group and learn more about the role played by the immune cells of the brain in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Discover the different cell types studied by the researchers – microglia, neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes – through beautiful microscopy images.

11h30-12h30 – Lab tour in German

14h-15h – Lab tour in French

  • Studying the brain thanks to yeasts and mammalian cells

Visit the lab of the Enzymology & Metabolism group and explore different models used to study human diseases, from neurodegenerative disorders to rare diseases. Discover how yeasts and mammalian cell lines can be cultivated in the lab. Learn how these models are invaluable for drug screens and to better understand molecular mechanisms of diseases.

11h30-12h30 – Lab tour in English

14h-15h – Lab tour in English

If you would like to join one or two of the tours, register online.

The visits will start from the LCSB booth in the lobby of the Maison des Arts et des Étudiants. If some of the tours are not fully booked (10 people per lab tour), registration will be possible on-site during the Open Day.
