Exploring the microbial world

Microbiome Secreted Mols

The Systems Ecology group, led by Prof. Paul Wilmes, studies microbial communities to better understand their role in diverse ecosystems and in human health.

Time series analysis of microbiomes

We apply a systems biology approach to study microbial populations in great detail. We are especially interested in the gut microbiome, exploring the human-microbe interactions to provide insights into diseases such as colorectal cancer and Parkinson’s. We also study lipid accumulating bacteria found in wastewater to understand at a fundamental level the functioning of microbial ecosystems.
