In March, the Scienteens Lab has organised its first Science for everyone workshop. The idea behind this initiative? Giving the opportunity to people to discover the Belval campus, the university of Luxembourg and what happens in a research lab. So, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, a group of 8 participants joined the Scienteens Lab team for a cultural and scientific programme.

The visit started with a 45 minutes guided tour around the campus focusing on the rich history of this unique site that mixes heritage from the steel industry – with the impressive haut-fourneaux – and modern buildings hosting the university. The group then reached the Scienteens Lab headquarters, the House of Biomedicine or Biotech I, for a presentation about the university and the scientific research conducted here. After a short break, the afternoon continued with the visit of a lab of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) and detailed explanation about the equipment, methods and procedures used in research. Last but not least, the programme ended with the hands-on workshop. Following a brief introduction to the basics of DNA, the participants put on their lab coats, extracted the DNA from the bacteria Escherichia coli and measured the DNA concentration.

After this successful first try, the Scienteens Lab decided to offer additional “Science for everyone” workshops in Biology, Mathematics and Physics. If you are interested in participating, check out the agenda and register online.
