Solar cells – High-tech materials research at the edge of physics

Online training on Teams.

During this training, you will have the opportunity to discover the brand-new physics workshop of the Scienteens Lab. This workshop encourages pupils to ask questions such as “What is the importance of photovoltaics for renewable energies?” or “How does a solar cell work?”, and to learn more about various manufacturing technologies for solar cells and their application.

The training revolves around renewable energies, semiconductors, photovoltaics, solid state physics (crystals), optics, current-voltage characteristics, absorption/emission, and the photoelectric effect.

After a brief introduction to the topic, you will carry out Current-Voltage measurements with a solar simulator during a hands-on workshop, make a dye-sensitized solar cell yourself and compare it with silicon solar cells. A discussion about the results and the methodology will conclude the training.
