To adapt its offer to the current situation – that prevents classes from visiting our premises – the Scienteens Lab has developed new activities: interactive online talks and small workshops that can be done at school with the help of our team. Check out the programme and contact us to book an activity for the start of the new year.

In biology, the workshop called “DNA on tour” will allow high-school students to explore the effect of UV light on the DNA of the bacterium Escherichia coli while staying at school. After a short introduction by the Scienteens Lab team, they will be able to perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and learn how to cast and run an agarose gel. For those who prefer a fully virtual activity, our team has also prepared an interactive online talk to address questions about the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19. An opportunity to get further insight into what a virus is, how we can protect ourselves against it and how the different types of vaccines work.

In mathematics, a new workshop focusing on mathematical modelling of infectious diseases will be available both online or in-school. It will introduce one of the basic models for epidemics, the SIR-model, and show how to derive equations that allow to predict and simulate the occurrence of infections within a given population. The students will also have the possibility to realise their own implementation of the SIR-model.

In physics, a new online and in-school activity based on the PhyPhox app will explore the potential of the smartphone as a tool to perform small scientific experiments. After learning about the diverse sensors available in a smartphone, the participants will carry out experiments with easy to come by household items and will be able to test diverse measurements themselves.

These four activities are open for booking from 2021 onwards. If you wish to schedule an online or in-school workshop with your class, you can contact the Scienteens Lab’s team by email:
