Current research projects

  • Mobile interaction for refugee integration - MiRi

The MiRi project develops digital support activities for beneficiaries and seekers of international protection. The project develops the “YouAreWelcome” platform (youarewelcome.lu), which is a multilingual digital information, communication and learning hub to be used on mobile and desktop devices. The project is funded by the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. (2016 – 2019)

Collaborators: Zohreh BANIASADI (research associate), Maral BIABANPEIMA (student assistant), Karim MUSTAFA (student assistant), Gilberto Cardoso (weblearn.lu)

  • Robotics for kids

The Robotics for Kids projects stimulates students’ interests in technology, ICT, robots and basic programming by proposing playful, creative and inquiry-based learning activities. Young students get inspired to build and program robots with the LEGO Mindstorms equipment, let them interact with the environment through sensors and motors, and create own projects in which robots move and achieve specific tasks

  • A workshop for classes from fundamental school is organised in June-July in cooperation with the regional agency PROSUD (RobotecSUD 2011 – up to date)
  • An interdisciplinary technology-enhanced inquiry project about “Living and working in space” is proposed to classes from secondary school in collaboration with the scienteens-lab of LCSB, the MENJE, LIDIT, and proSUD (2018 - 2019)

Collaborators: Gilberto CARDOSO (weblab.lu), student assistants

Current research projects in cooperation with other research institutes

  • Towards a robotic assistant for MHVL

in cooperation with the Automation and Robotics Research Group (Prof. Dr. Holger Voos)

The project develops mobile service robots for supporting interactions with visitors in the VdL museum. It investigates the capabilities of advanced cognitive humanoid robots (Pepper from Aldebaran) in the museum space. The robot provides orientation and recommendations to visitors regarding a historical panorama of the city in the 17th century. The project models cooperation among robots and humans and develops coordination mechanisms for human-robot interaction systems (2016 – 2019)

Collaborators: Zohreh BANIASADI (research associate) and the team of Prof. Dr. Holger Voos

  • International Network “Centre of Excellence for Technology Education - CETE” in cooperation with Universität Duisburg-Essen (D - convener), the University of Missouri (USA) - Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Cambridge University (UK), Pädagogische Hochschule Nord West Schweiz (CH).

The Center of Excellence for Technology Education (CETE) is a network of leading academic research institutions in the sector of engineering education. The aim of the international network is to promote research on engineering educational processes through joint research projects, PhD training, study and research visits. Further, the network strives to integrate research-based knowledge in school practice through publications and teacher training. The joint work looks also for enhancing teacher training through international study cooperations and digital teaching and learning offers. Since 2015 the network is promoted with funds of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the context of the programme line on thematic networks. (2015 – 2018)

Current PhD research projects

  • Integration issues of Arab refugees in Luxembourg post the Middle East political transformation

The project examines the issues Arab refugees encounter when staying, working and living in Luxembourg after getting granted the status of international protection. The project is funded by the “Association of Egyptians In Luxembourg – AEL” and conducted in cooperation with their project “Initiative Choukrane”. (2016 – 2019)

PhD student: Haythem Kamel Emam BADAWY (MA in Education)

  • Space as a catalyst for a wholesome school environment: Systemic conceiving and achieving of conviviality in schools of the 21st Century

The FNR-funded multi-disciplinary research project merges evidence from the fields of engineering, education, innovative technologies, health and social sciences. The objective is to establish a scientific basis for designing smart and sustainable school buildings. The outcome will be an internationally recognized scientific reference system, which can serve as a tool for developing guidelines for future school buildings. (2018 – 2022)

PhD student: Melissa BELLESI (MA in architecture)
