I am an Associate-Professor in Education with a background in Sociolinguistices. I joined the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education at the University of Luxembourg in 2010.

My main interests are in multilingualism, work and learning. I enjoy starting from real-life issues and developing concepts and tools to reach a better understanding of these issues. The analytical work usually involves pointing unresolvable paradoxes and contradictions inherent in complex situations and developing concepts and models able to give a semiotic shape to the issues under investigation that allow stakeholders to engage in new ways about them.

I particularly value research that has an interdisciplinary and contrastive outlook. I find rewarding for epistemological innovation and methodological creativity to talk with professionals and academics from different backgrounds. I also value research and teaching which is relevant to people’s life and work and that unfolds from an ethics of care and a multicultural ethos of communication.

In the past, I have dialogued with different (professional) groups: unemployed youth, workplace tutors, car mechanics, car-repair show owners, masons, lumberjacks, sheetrockers, cleaners, dancers, vocational teachers, primary school teachers, curriculum developers in Higher Education, somatic education practitioners.

I have spent substantial amount of time observing and/or filming professional activity in different milieux to investigate professional development and the role played by language and other semiotic/multimodal resources in this development.  Since my arrival in Luxembourg, I have also become interested in questions linked to what happens in the ‘contact zones’ (Pratt 1991) between groups from various backgrounds in context of migration, internationalization or multilingualism.

Because professionals issues are always different, my research also reflects a diversity of foci. My own career trajectory across different disciplinary and geographical contexts also contributes to this relative eclectism. I like to think of myself as a ‘cross-border worker’ of science.

Academic career

I started my studies with a BA degree in romance philology and got interested in Latin-American Literature. I also received a Teaching Accreditation for secondary school from the University of Louvain (Belgium).

In 1993, I did a semester abroad at University College Cork (Ireland), studying French literature and linguistics.

In 1997 I obtained a MSc. in Computational Linguistics and a Certificate in Translation from Georgetown University (USA, Washington DC) where I also later obtained my PhD in Sociolinguistics (2003) under the supervision of Ron Scollon who has been highly influential in my work.

In 2003-2004, I was the recipient of a Francqui Foundation post-doctoral fellowship and worked at the Research Center for Crisis and Conflict Management at the Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences and Management of the University of Namur(Belgium).

From 2004 to 2010, I held the research position of ‘Maître-Assistant’ at the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the University of Geneva, in the sector on adult education and learning, working on a FNR-funded project on interactions in vocational education and training (http://www.unige.ch/fapse/interaction-formation/). I also taught a course on Multimodality at the University of Neuchâtel.

In 2010, I joined the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education at the University of Luxembourg, where I added research on multilingualism, mobility and multilingual education to my previous interests

Invited professorships

I have been invited as a guest professor at the University of Thammassat (Bangkok, Thailand) in July 2014 and the University of Strasbourg (France) in October 2015, to talk about Mediated Discourse Analysis, Ethnography, Diversity, Critical Pedagogy and Multilingualism in Luxembourg (in Higher Education and in primary schools).
