Isabelle Tournier works as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Gerontology and Psychology within the Research Unit INSIDE. Dr. Tournier received a doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Bordeaux (France). During her PhD, she completed a 10 month  internship  in  Dr. Louis Bherer’s laboratory  in the Centre de Recherche de l’Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal (Canada).  Before  joining the University of Luxembourg, she worked in the Laboratoire de Psychologie de la Conduite within the Institut Français des Sciences et Technologies des Transports, de l’Aménagement et des Réseaux of Versailles (France) for the European project SAMERU.

The focus of her PhD was on the evolution of cognitive and behavioral adaptation during aging. More precisely, it analysed the impact of cognitive resources (processing speed, working memory, and vocabulary) and behavioral resources (routinization) on the evolution of executive functions with aging. For the European project SAMERU (Safer Mobility for Elderly Road Users), she examined all aspects of road safety facing elderly road users (i.e., car drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, bus users, etc.) and produced recommendations for prioritizing actions that could be taken by local authorities. For this, she investigated psychological, sociological, physical, and medical aspects influencing road safety during aging. The main research interests of Dr. Tournier are cognitive adaptation and self-regulations during aging.

Current research projects at the University of Luxembourg

National projects

  • She is principal investigator of the FEELSAFE project about how assistive technologies can participate to the maintenance of safety and feeling of safety in older adults living at home (Internal Research Projects grant, University of Luxembourg, 2016-2018)
  • She currently conducts the CONNECT project (funded by the Fondation du Grand-Duc et de la Grande-Duchesse, 2015-2018) that is supervised by Prof. Christine Schiltz since September 2017 and was previously supervised by Prof. Dr. Dieter Ferring. This project aims at the implementation of a web forum favouring the information and social support for people concerned by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia in Luxembourg.

European projects

  • She is UL leader for the European MinD project (Horizon 2020-MSCA-RISE, No 691001, 2016-2020) entitled “Designing for people with dementia : Mindful self-empowerment and social engagement” and supervised by Dr. Kristina Niedderer (University of Wolverhampton, UK).
  • She is UL leader for the European ARPA  project (Erasmus + Strategic Partnership, 2017-2019) about improving mental health networks for older adults in Europe with the creation of an Internet platform of communication and exchange. This project is supervised by Dr. Laurence Fond-Harmant (LIH, Lux).

European research networks

  • She is involved in the COST Action CA15122: Reducing old-age social exclusion: collaborations in research and policy (ROSEnet) as co-leader of the working group Community and spatial exclusion (Chair of the Action: Dr. Kieran Walsh, Vice Chair of the Action: Prof. Thomas Scharf).
  • She is also part for the UL of the ECIR group headed by Prof. Michèle Grossen, “Ages for learning and growth: Sociocultural perspectives”, AGILE (2015-2018).

In 2013-2015, she has been involved in the Senior + project conducted in collaboration with the city of Differdange (supervised by Prof. Dr. Dieter Ferring). Isabelle Isabelle Tournier is also teaching in the Bachelor of Psychology and the Master of Gerontology of the University of Luxembourg.
